Note to John Williams' and Jerry Goldsmith' fans: AVOID,

I have listened to soundtracks of most of the movies these gentlemen have worked for. And I have listened the original tracks of the themes included on this CD.I was shocked when I heard the sound coming from "Superman: The Ultimate Collection". Horrible! It would be easy to argue that soundtracks not done by the original orchestra will always be inferior. But I also listen to "compilation" CDs. For example, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done soundtracks of other movie composers and have always done a remarkable job. Most compilation albums are excellent, even when compared to the originals. This is NOT one of them. I think the orchestra featured in this album was missing quite a few instruments, and have "simplified" some themes. The brass also seemed a little too loud. Some themes were missing some key melodies at certain times. If you have already listened to the originals and expect an adequate remake, look somewhere else. This album will just insult your ears. NOTE: I cannot comment on the television tracks featured on this album, since I have never seen the old shows...

Reviews are for a different CD,

This review is from: Superman: The Ultimate Collection (Soundtrack Anthology) (Audio CD)
Some of the very negative ratings given for this CD were intended for a different CD, Superman (Ultimate Collection). Some of the negative reviews refer to music from Superman III and the play; these pieces are not in THIS CD, Superman- The Ultimate Collection, but are in the other CD, Superman (Ultimate Collection). Hope this helps some of you.

Unworthy,

If only I had carefully read a previous negative review! The concept of this CD is a promising one, but unfortunately it's of such poor quality that if I were to hear it in a elevator, I would push the "open" button and get off...in between floors! Bland, unfaithful, lacking dynamics. I hope someone takes this concept, clears the rights to the originals, and goes for it---the right way!

Wow, I couldn't disagree more with the other fellow's review. This is a Superman fan's dream. The TV theme brought back so many memories, and I also really loved the cartoon theme. The John Williams music is very faithful to the original versions. If you're expecting the soundtracks, these aren't them, but they sound great.

Superman soundtrack - Disappointing!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Superman: The Ultimate Collection (Soundtrack Anthology) (Audio CD)
Most of the fans of the old George Reeves TV show would have liked more music from the series, especially themes from the second season. Regardless, the arrangements of the few themes that were selected from The Adventures of Superman were very poor. The tempos and scoring are weak and not faithful enough to the original. The rest of the CD's arrangements are bland and often sound like Muzak. Nothing is an improvement over the original recordings. The poorest recreation of classic movie/tv music I have yet to encounter.

Not the ultimate collection, but a great basic compilation,
This review is from: Superman: The Ultimate Collection (Soundtrack Anthology) (Audio CD)
If you own all of the stuff, it's probably the worst. However, it's a good basic on the music of Superman movies and TV shows. It primarily focuses on the Christopher Reeve films, and mainly uses just the themes from the other stuff. In other words, it's a great disc to start out with. Being as cheap and lazy as I am, I haven't bought the CD that I probably should buy, the extended soundtrack for Superman: The Movie.

I found the CD to be lots of fun. Sure, it would've been nice if they hadn't had so much from the movies. (Some of the tunes from the AOS episode "Panic in the Sky" would've been nice. And where was the theme from the old Filmation cartoons?) Still, what was there was well-orchestrated. The movie stuff, in some cases, I couldn't tell from Williams' originals. It was nice to hear the music inspired by the Broadway musical. And, in my mind, the theme from the Fleisher cartoons was worth the cost of the CD by itself.

This cd rocks! Since I am the greatest Superman fan, of course I would like this cd. But not only Superman fans should like it! Everyone who loves superhero music or collects these types of cd's should add this to their collection.

If your looking for Original Recordings...,

From the Superman films, play, and the TV show then avoid this collection. these are rerecordings. And badly done rerecordings. While they do sound similar to the original. They sound like they were done by a second rate orchestra. What's sad is that you can easily get the original recording that are on this set. Sure it would cost you a bit more in money, but in the end you would be glad you did. After all, it's the original recording that you fell in love with. not these bastardized versions.
