Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Some of the Man of Steel's earliest exploits are in this lavish, pricey hardcover. Taken from the long-running World's Finest Comics, they depict a character still in the hands of his originators. Siegel wrote most of them; artist Joe Shuster first drew and later supervised the artwork. Dating from 1939 to 1944, the 17 stories trace the development of comics' first superhero. Shuster's primitive art, which possesses quaint charm, was superceded by that of more accomplished artists, whose styles still were crude by contemporary standards. The mundane jewel thieves, blackmailers, and racketeers who were Superman's early quarries gave ground to superpowered foes like the robot Metalo and the Insect Master, who gave him a run for his money. Superman grew more powerful, too. At first he leapt vast distances rather than flew, and his strength was a fraction of what it became. Although one story has Superman fighting a black-market tire ring, wartime propaganda is surprisingly scant in these stories. These fascinating if unsophisticated artifacts display one of American culture's most enduring icons aborning. Gordon Flagg

5.0 out of 5 stars Superman in the World's Finest, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Superman: World's Finest Comics Archives, Vol. 1 (DC Archive Editions) (Hardcover)
This volume collects all of the Superman adventures from the World's Finest comics, which started off as the New York World's Fair comic and sold for a then very expensive 25 cents. These are the solo Superman stories (he wouldn't team up w/ Batman until years later). Unlike the other volumes, this one covers about four or five years since it was released quarterly and each cotained only one short Superman stories. This volume also contains the first cover depicting Superman and Batman together.
The stories are not much different than the Action Comics or Superman's own comic. The good thing is you get more supervillians in this one than the usual early 40's comics- Superman isn't just fighting gangsters or corrupt businessmen in this. There's the Insect Master for one, and Metallo as well as a few others. Dont know when volume 2 is ever going to come out, but this one is worth getting.
