Amazon.com Review

Forget Tim Burton's Batman, just think about Fritz Lang's Superman. That's right, writers Jean-Marc Lofficier and Roy Thomas and edgy expressionist artist Ted McKeever present an "Elseworlds" story in which Clark Kent and Superman inhabit the world of Lang's Metropolis. Even if you're not familiar with the Lang film, this book is worth it for the stunning and creepy McKeever art, presented in full color on high-quality, glossy paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars sublime, September 30, 2010
This review is from: Superman's Metropolis (Elseworlds) (Comic)
Superman's Metropolis is one of those rare comic book experiments that works to strengthen the two sources it borrows from. The DC Superman archetype and Fritz Lang's Metropolis are inter-spliced beautifully into an amazing story that adds to both myths. All the dialogue from the movie is put directly into the word balloons, while the captions come off as being written by a writer with an amazing visceral grasp of poetical language. This came as a shocking surprise, being that Roy Thomas (of 60s-70s horrible comic writing fame) is one of two writers working on the book.

Besides the eternally applicable story, the art is the machine that truly fuels the book and rockets it to a world of its own. Ted McKeever's unique style may be an acquired taste to the standard comic reader, but in this fully-painted book, he takes his work to undeniable heights. McKeever's work is both remotely simple and utterly complex. He perfectly exemplifies the German Expressionism he is portraying. The visuals of the book are on par with the visuals in the film, though the space and difference between them are incalculably immense.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to see Metropolis in a stunning new light.

Great Concept: Combine the Superman Mythos with the 1927 film "Metropolis"... an entertaining and refreshing read!
