A must-own album!,

Wow! At a time when music on the radio is so stale and you think everything that can be done has been, this band comes along. Besides being excellent musicians, they put on an energetic live show and have a sense of humor. Extra points for the pink xmas lights on the tuba and use of the phrase "socially retarded" in "Danglin' Feet". Their music was described to me as "mariachi polka punk" with a hint of Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen) in the singer's voice. Sounds like a strange combination, but it works! If you are looking for quality music, BUY THIS ALBUM!!

A breath of fresh air!,

This album is by far one of the best underground albums I've ever heard. It is a very unique blend of Russian/gypsy style music and good ole rock'n'roll. The magic created by this Colorado band is a wonderful breath of fresh air in the mostly stagnant popular music scene of the last few years. I challange anyone to listen to this album and NOT be dancing their all over the place!

The great beginning...,

I started with Little Miss Sunshine and worked my way backward in DeVotchKa's discography. This album is a little different from their later work, with some musicians that are no longer with the band. But their unique sound started here, has carried on and become greater. Supermelodrama is more raucous, with more of an American indie-rock sound, but sets itself apart with violins, accordions, etc, and some cool guitars and beats. It's fun to hear, to sing, to dance to, and the lyrics are always great. I won't even bother comparing it, because it's unlike anything I'd ever heard before. There's not a bad song on the album.

My Favorite DeVotchKa Album,

I fell in love with DeVotchKa, like many other fans, after watching the movie "Little Miss Sunshine;" its soundtrack was composed of DeVotchKa songs, and the band had composed many of the tracks specifically for the movie. I bought three of their albums-- A Mad and Faithful Telling, Curse Your Little Heart and How it Ends, in that order-- and I love all three albums with all my heart. After having my infatuation for them renewed after I saw them in concert at a small venue in Chicago recently (the experience was amazing), I craved more DVK.
To appease this fire, I ordered Supermelodrama and it has now become my favorite album of theirs (although I haven't heard Una Volta yet.) They have a more immature sound in my opinion; by immature, I mean that it sounds less polished then their later albums, although I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I feel that the songs on Supermelodrama are filled with a different kind of emotion; maybe it's due to the feeling I have that Nick Urata's voice sounds a little differently here than in the albums I mentioned before. It sounds more yearning and young (the album was from 2002, though...) I love Danglin' Feet, Gasoline Seprent, Whiskey Breath, Sunrise on Cicero, and Jaws of the World. All of the instrumental songs will get you dancin'. If you are able to understand what Nick is saying (or if you read the lyrics online), you will be overtaken by the beauty of the lyrics (at least I was), but then again, would you ever expect less of DeVotchKa? They will continue to be my favorite band, and in order to cement your respect and appreciation for them, I would recommend you see them live. Great album!

Never having heard of this group until "Little Miss Sunshine", I was very pleasantly surprised with their cd. Our family plays all their cds constantly.

I have enjoyed their music ever since I first saw a Gears of War commercial and Little Miss Sunshine. I wasn't too sure about the cd, but it wasn't too expensive and I haven't been dissappointed. I have been pleased with their overall music and the songs on the cd aren't repetitive. They have their own unique attributes but still feel like Devotchka. I would recommend purchasing this cd to anyone who is either entering their music for a taste or wanting to continue their Devotchka catalog.

This was an incredible record. When I first started to listen I could barely recognize Nick Urata. This had a much more "Rock" feel to it as opposed to a more orchestral sounding arrangement in their more recent records. But this is great and any fan of DeVotcKa should add this to their collection.
