4.0 out of 5 stars Good power-effecient box, couple quirks,
This review is from: Supermicro SuperServer Atom D525 1U Rackmount Server Barebone System, Black SYS-5015A-EHF-D525 (Personal Computers)Update: I like these machines a lot, and have installed 30+ of them here at SomaFM now. They are very reliable and the IPMI is great. I wish it had an additional fan to the one in the power supply, and I wish the 2.5" mounting options were better (see below). The D525 processor provides plenty of horsepower. We run both Windows XP (for some specialized radio broadcast software) and linux on these boxes.
While they are not perfect they really deserve 4.75 stars :) There isn't anything that compares to this at the price point.
This is good performing, low power consumption box. It is mostly fanless (there is a small fan in the PS), depending on what you're doing with it you may want to install a small fan in it. In one of them, I used a PCI "slot" fan which is OK, but uses up your one slot.
Unlike older SuperMicro Atom-based servers, this one does include a PCIe riser card.
Issues: There is no way to properly install a 2.5" drive without drilling your own holes (Update: or buying an optional bracket). If you're lazy, you can install a 2.5" drive with a single screw and it will mostly stay in place. But this is a strange omission, and why I give it 4 stars. There is room to fit 2 2.5" drives in the case without any special brackets if they'd only put in those screw holes. There are brackets available that let you put 2 2.5" drives i the space of a 3.5" one, and I've
[UPDATE: this turned out to be a bad batch of PCIe cards, so the server was not to blame!-->>I've also had problems getting a PCIe audio DSP card to be recognized. Not sure if the card has issues, or the slot is giving me problems.]

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet little rackmount server,
This review is from: Supermicro SuperServer Atom D525 1U Rackmount Server Barebone System, Black SYS-5015A-EHF-D525 (Personal Computers)We have a couple of these are PFSENSE boxes and we are very satisfied with the build quality and speed. The 4gb limit is a proc limitation, but not an issue as 4gb is plenty for a firewall.
Love how this model COMES with the riser card, some do not. Would recommend for a firewall or small appliance server any day of the week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great device for appliance use,
This review is from: Supermicro SuperServer Atom D525 1U Rackmount Server Barebone System, Black SYS-5015A-EHF-D525 (Personal Computers)I've now used several of these as the platform for Untangle firewalls. They are solid high-quality units. They are not silent but the power supply noise is quiet enough to place in a small office environment. The inclusion of a riser card for the expansion slot is a nice touch. I've used Supermicro components for over ten years now and have never had one let me down.
4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect small appliance server. Could use a some fans.,
My only other disappointment with this unit is the lack of fans. No fans are included in this unit, to include (or not) a fan for the CPU heatsink. I had to purchase a separate fan and modify the heatsink slightly so that the fan would fit within the unit while ensuring proper air flow. Without the fans installed, the CPU temp was about 65 degrees Celcius under load. No with the fans installed and better thermal paste, the unit runs nice and cool at 38-44 degrees Celcius.
All things considered, I would still, and probably will, purchase more of these units in the future.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent low power server,
5.0 out of 5 stars One week in use and it's running great!,
