4.0 out of 5 stars Superb ear tickler of a CD
The more I listen to this, the further it climbs up my "Best of 2001" list. It is beautifully melodic and endlessly imaginative in its use of interweaving sonic textures. Also, Marumari continues the welcome trend toward use of treated "live" instruments in electronic music. In fact, this is so warm and organic sounding, it really can't be kept...

The more I listen to this, the further it climbs up my "Best of 2001" list. It is beautifully melodic and endlessly imaginative in its use of interweaving sonic textures. Also, Marumari continues the welcome trend toward use of treated "live" instruments in electronic music. In fact, this is so warm and organic sounding, it really can't be kept strictly under the "electronica" umbrella. "Unearthly" would be a more appropriate category for music of this kind. Similar to (and recommended if you like) 310, Arovane, Four Tet and (of course) Boards of Canada.

Indeed this is what Marumari wants to sound like. Ballad of the Round Ball shows glimmers of potential. The Wolves Hollow shines, but only on a handful of tracks. Supermogadon steps higher and creates and album full of Marumari's "sound." Much less chaotic than the Wolves Hollow, and less aggressive and distorted than ..Round Ball, Josh's 3rd album (yeah it's his 4th, but you can't buy his first anymore so that don't count) grooves, soothes and smoothes your pains and worries away. It's extremely lush and warm sounding, almost melting off of your stereo and into your ears. Every song is well written and fits right where it is on the album, which is unprecedented for Marumari.

Buy this album. It is indeed one of the better IDM albums to come out this year. And check him on his tour. As I write this, he's wrapping up his US tour and heading over to Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supermogadon is bumpin'!!!, July 5, 2001

---Supermogadon is what Marumari has been buiding towards his entire electronic career. The beats bang and the melodies are mature and beautifuly subdued but not limited. Marumari uses groovey samples, and soothing vocal clippings that get you "singing" along (funny in that there are no lyrics, or none apparant anyway) while you shake your bum. In my opinion, this is without question one of the 5 best IDM albums so far this year... I can't wait to catch him on tour this summer.
