Book Description

4 and upP and up
Supermom is everywhere—she's up in a tree, deep in the ocean, high in the sky, or she may even be standing next to you! Because Supermom is every mom, from a tiny ant to a giant blue whale. In this terrific tribute to moms, children will enjoy the fun mommy facts that are included. "Penquins travel for days to find fish for their babies," and "your mom goes out in all kinds of weather for your food, too!" An index at the end offers slightly more detailed information on some of the animal moms in the book.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-A simple look at the nurturing nature of and similarities between animal and human mothers. Supermoms come in many sizes and colors, including 26 familiar animals and women from a variety of ethnic groups. Despite the diversity, these moms have much in common. "Supermom has babies! She lays eggs-or she carries her babies inside her body until they're born." The accompanying illustrations show a mother snake coiled around her eggs and the rounded bellies of a blue whale, a cat, and a human mother inset with pictures of their growing babies. Captions next to each figure give additional facts, e.g., "Blue whales are the biggest moms on earth!" "Cats can have lots of babies." Other spreads show animal and human moms bathing, cuddling, protecting, and feeding their young. The text and colorful cartoon-style illustrations set against ample white space work together to lead the eye across the pages. The watercolor, graphite, and crayon artwork reflects the light approach to the scientific facts, similar to this team's My Body, Your Body (Watts, 1997), and gives the book a warm and comfortable tone.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

From Booklist

Ages 2-5. Moms do many things for their children. After they give birth or lay eggs, they often provide food and shelter, transportation, entertainment, protection, and love. How humans of various races and animals accomplish this is the focus of Manning's book. A brightly colored pen-and-ink and watercolor painting shows a human mom scooting along on her motorbike, her youngster seated behind her. Smaller illustrations on the same double-page spread show a monkey swinging with her baby clinging to her back, an orca swimming alongside her young, and a swallow flying to her babies' nest. The spare text and the captions accompanying the pictures are in different type styles and sizes, which give a cartoon look to the pages. The animals pictured are identified and their behaviors explained in the Supermom Index at book's end. Manning acknowledges that some animals, like snakes, merely lay eggs and then leave and that the "scary" supermom, pictured with multiple piercings and tricolor hair, may be offensive to some. A hint about a sequel on fathering concludes. Ellen Mandel

My 2 year old has really enjoyed this book (we checked it out from the library). She likes looking at all of the different human moms and animal moms. She liked the baby in the bathtub, the tiger, and the wildebeest, of all things! The illustrations are very sweet, especially of the moms cuddling and playing with their babies. I think the illustrations of pregnancy are excellent, to see the baby inside mom could be great to help a toddler understand why mom's tummy is getting bigger when she's pregnant. I also love the illustrations of breastfeeding, and of the mom using a sling to carry her baby. My little girl and I have had a nice time reading this book together. I am planning on adding it to our collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars All kinds of mommies, September 25, 2002

What a delightful book! My 3 year old daughter loves this book as it is filled with many types of Mommies, human and animal, and how they take care of thier young. Espcially nice to see is the human mom breastfeding her baby (no bottles in sight--other animals nurse their young too!). The book shows protective moms and busy moms and sweet moms and "wild" moms (yes, there is a tattooed and peirced mom with green hair--so what, lets teach our children NOT to judge people by their looks!) And of course all the animal counterparts.

If you want a wonderful book showing the all the great qualities human moms have and who their counterparts are in the animal kingdom, plus a great introduction to animals in general, then I highly suggest you buy this book!
