A book you can really use,
By Jajemi (Osaka, Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Supermummy: The Ultimate Mumpreneur's Guide to Online Business Success (Paperback)
This book arrived in the midst of a crazy week. I put it aside without even opening it having completely forgotten what I had even ordered. A few days later I sat down to take a breather (toddler's nap-time) and opened the package.
"Great!" I thought, "perfect timing!" It was just what I needed having reached a low-point business-wise. My small online store had great sales preceding Christmas then the recession set in and everything came to a screaming halt. Still convinced that people are still buying I was racking my brains for a strategy to ride it out. A strategy? try dozens of strategies in this book! It's a whole business plan with step-by-step instructions on how to execute it. And it's written by a real mum so there's no jargon or abbreviations that mothers new to the business have no clue about. It's from one mum to another with no nonsense and no rose colored lenses. McGee is brutally honest so you won't be set up to fail. If you're thinking about starting a business then this is the book for you. McGee's worksheets take you through a critical analysis of your idea. Still in the fledgling stages? fine-tune with this book. Think you have nothing to learn, things are going well? Think again! This book includes up-to-the minute technology tips - all about social network marketing, blogging, email newsletters - the nuts and bolts you need to take you through to the next level. For the first time since my college days I actually took pen to paper and wrote down ideas. Buzzing with new things to try I put them into effect straight away. Business is not booming yet but I feel invigorated and have laid the foundation for an explosion this year recession or not! Watch this space!! And yes, I'm a mum with two young children including a preschooler AND I am an expat living away from my support network (read babysitters). If I can do it then you can too!

Good Primer on Building a Work-from-Home Business,
By
This review is from: Supermummy: The Ultimate Mumpreneur's Guide to Online Business Success (Paperback)
For those who have dreamed of leaving the corporate world and spending more time with your kids - this book is full of motivating thoughts and great tips on starting your own online business. It's a very easy read and full of stories and ideas - from someone who has clearly walked this path herself.
The majority of the book focuses on marketing and building your web presence. The author discusses who to develop electronic newsletters, ezines, alliances, websites, and other tools to help you get the word out. I'm a marketing professional, and found these chapters to be a great overview of what it takes to develop a web presence and begin to draw in leads. The book is a bit light on developing a business plan, but the author makes up for that by addressing the motivations behind starting your own business - and overcoming fear, tackling time management and taking the leap of faith. A good book - and an easy read.

This review is from: Supermummy: The Ultimate Mumpreneur's Guide to Online Business Success (Paperback)
This book is aimed at mums who have just started or are thinking of starting a business, as it has lots of tips and information for coming up with a business idea and promoting this new venture. One thing I always look for as a business mum, is advice from people who `walk the talk'. I'm quite choosy about who I listen to just because I want to know that if you are telling me a way to do something, that you understand what it is like to be in my shoes, and this book doesn't disappoint on that score. The writer, Mel McGee obviously writes from experience, knowing the little barriers that many mums put up to stop themselves from achieving great things, and Mel shows you how to remove them. There are some really powerful messages in the book around stopping limiting beliefs, something I've had to deal with in my past as a Mumpreneur and I know many Mumpreneur friends have too.
The book starts by building the reader's confidence that they can start a business and the chapters are sprinkled with `Supertips' to help you along the way. One message that rings out loud and clear from the book is that nothing is achieved without ACTION! And I fully agree - ideas are great but it is putting them into action that makes the money. Even if you don't have a business idea but are thinking that you'd like to start a business, then this book gives you some useful exercises to get started and help you create your money making idea I really liked the tip about trying out your sales message on your kids or your mum. If they can understand the benefits of your business, you've cracked it! This is a great way to check that you are delivering the right message to your potential clients and getting to the point quickly and coherently. I worked in marketing for more than a decade before starting up my business as a Virtual Assistant and have never heard it said quite so succinctly before! All in all, a very practical book loaded with advice. If you are looking for both a guide-book on starting a business and a cheerleader to encourage you along the way, this book is it!
