Editorial Reviews

How's this for a story arc: the Gates of Hell are opened, unleashing both Lucifer himself and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and bringing to an end civilization as we know it. That's what awaits fans of Supernatural in its fifth and most epic season to date. The stumbles in plot or character that are typical to most long-running series are largely missing from this season (though some might consider the stunt casting of Paris Hilton as a pagan goddess in "Hammer of the Gods" as such); instead, there's a solid, complex, and entirely satisfying run of episodes, and even a pair of series highlights in "Changing Channels" and "The Real Ghostbusters." The former finds heroes Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) trapped in a TV-influenced netherworld populated by perverse small-screen archetypes, while the latter is a clever bit of meta-fiction involving a real ghost at a Supernatural fan convention, complete with Winchester brothers look-alikes. The other 20 episodes bounce between stand-alone adventures and the larger story at hand, which finds the brothers racing to collect the rings of the Four Horsemen, which will return Lucifer to his prison. This is fantasy storytelling for television at its best--broad in scope and heavy with special effects, but never forgetting that the core of the show is the relationship between Sam and Dean and their joint quest to rid the world of evil. Both are well represented here in a season that brings the show's main story line to its fitting and satisfying conclusion.

Fans should also be pleased with most of the extras on the six-disc set for Season 5. The most ambitious feature is the Apocalypse Survival Guide, hosted by Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver). Presented as a tour through Bobby's house, the guide gives viewers a detailed lowdown on the major players in the war against Satan, including the Horsemen, various demons, and the Man in Red himself. Navigating one's way through the interactive videos can be a challenge, as the layout requires viewers to constantly restart the disc in order to review certain videos, but for sheer informational content, it's hard to beat. Also present is a commentary track by series creator Eric Kripke (who left the series at the end of this season) and writer Ben Edlund on "The End," which required such elaborate sets that the show earned its own back lot; said location also gets a once-over, as does an unaired scene from "The Real Ghostbusters." Best of all is perhaps the entire web series Ghostfacers, which pokes much-needed fun at the reality show Ghost Hunters in addition to providing some minor scares. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

Twenty-six years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. Subsequently, their father raised them to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America ... and he taught them how to kill it. This haunting series follows the Winchester brothers as they crisscross the lonely and mysterious back roads of the country in their '67 Chevy Impala, hunting down every evil supernatural force they encounter along the way. At the end of the fourth season, Sam unwittingly broke the final seal – that held Lucifer captive in Hell. Now, Lucifer is free, the Apocalypse is here and angels prepare for a spectacular final battle. Against a landscape of celestial violence, natural disasters and a rising human death toll, Sam and Dean, with the help of fallen angel Castiel, must find a way to achieve the impossible: Kill the Devil.

I am a psychology grad student and what you could pick up from this show is incredible! The writers didn't just piece together plots out of nowhere when they had nothing better to do. The characters are all well developed and driven by the content over the years. Nothing is lost, everything, even characters that you have seen before are interwoven brilliantly from the beginning of the series up through the present, the sign of excellent writing! The best part about the production of this show is no film is wasted. You know how you watch 2nd rate shows or movies and there's absolutely no reason to have shown a scene, or they cut in the same useless scene later as if they don't have enough screenplay to make a typically-timed movie/show; that doesn't happen here! When there is a focus on a face the emotions are expertly carried by the characters from Sam & Dean to Jim & Cass. Even when they throw in a comical highlight or two it fits the characters perfectly. Now the music, hey I did my sentence of high school with most of the songs they use, which impresses me just as much as the lovely creaks, moans and groans of Dean's "Baby". This show is simply excellent and deserves so much more recognition than it gets, but most horror type genres are ignored as serious acting vehicles. Everyone should take a good or second-third-50th look at this series! -BB

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Season yet! May 15, 2010
Format:Blu-ray
I was hesitant to say the least when I started watching this season. I did not believe the writers could possibly continue to create as well as they had in season 4. I am proud to say that I was mistaken. Not only did the writing make me wish the next episode was right at my fingertips, but the way they crafted the story to touch previous episodes from every seasons was impressive. I found myself re-tracing the steps of various characters in seasons 1-4 to find out their real intentions. I do not know if I would recommend this for anyone who hasn't seen the first 4 seasons. The writing is great and interesting, but if you have seen the entire story-arch, you will understand character's motives and the intentions of the writers much more. I must also add a note about the final episode, Swan Song. The creator Eric Kripke wrote this as his last episode (he will not be the person in charge of the series next year). From watching it, I can tell he intended this to be his masterpiece, and he did not disappoint. Kudos to Kripke and good luck to Ms. Gamble who is taking over next year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Supernatural fan Lummi Nation, WA. March 26, 2010
Format:DVD
Jake Johnson, Washington Coastal Salish. I am a writer of fiction, poetry, and screenplay. I must say Eric Kripke is the man for putting this show out there for us to watch and be a part of. Supernatural is the best thing to happen to television since Rod Serling widened our mental state of being with The Twilight Zone. The Winchester family is the most intruguing in the history of fictisious hero families. The team of writers, directors, producers on down to the actors must have a love and dedecation to the show, it seems that way. I have seasons 1-4 on DVD and not one episode is a disapointment. This show rocks. As a writer who is picky with what he is entertained by, Supernatural is a sure winner, and should stand the test of time along side X Files, Star Trek, Twin Peaks and all the other shows from the depths of darkness. I advise, ney dare anyone to enter the world of Sam and dean Winchester. Check out this product, Eric Kripke is a sure talent, a name that will be remembered.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bittersweet Season July 7, 2010
Format:DVD
Season 5 may be the best season of Supernatural yet. It was well done, well acted, well written, and well executed, but it did have a few major faults (spoilers for seasons 1-4). In season four, Ruby and Castiel were used as the two opposing pillars, one was with Sam and one was with Dean. At the end of season 4, Ruby was written off, however unfortunately, Castiel wasn't. While Castiel may be one of the best characters ever made on this show, his constant presence makes it impossible for Sam and Dean to resolve their many issues that have been around since season three, leaving the main relationship to fall more between Dean and Cass, then Dean and Sam. The brotherly plot is the point of this show, so that made it not as enjoyable to watch. This season is full of guest stars, and while some are beautifully intertwined, some fall short. Ellen, Jo, Ash and Pamela are all given an epic and perfect appearance that brings closure, tears, laughter and everything in between. Meg the Demon is brought back in another body, for no apparent reason, just disappearing after a few episodes. And Anna is brought back less to forward the story, and more to find a way to write her off of the series for a while. Possibly the most thankful reappearance is of Sam and Dean's third brother, Adam, who's creation seemed to have no point until now. Of course there are reoccurring visits from Bobby and Chuck. Some episodes make sense, and some feel random. And with Supernatural being renewed for a sixth season, the plot that was supposed to end during the finale of season five is stretched out-- perhaps the worst part of this season.... Read more ›

What's up Amazon.com?????
Usually during Black Friday, Supernatural can go as low as 17.99 and that has happened for the past two years for the newer seasons. It was 18.49 on Thurs/Fri/Sat. and now it's $36. I was really let down.
