Biography

dc Talk is a Christian rock band, formed in Lynchburg, Virginia in the late 80s by Toby McKeehan, Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait. Their first two albums were hip-hop, but they had more success when they introduced pop themes into the third, Free at Last. The album took the band to platinum sales and earned them the Grammy for the Best Rock Gospel Album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Jesus Freak, February 21, 2000
This review is from: Supernatural (Audio CD)
This album is awesome, better than even their classic Jesus Freak album. (However, their version of Charlie Peacock's In The Light is still their best song, in my opinion.)

In spite of what some may say, the gospel is not the least bit toned down on this record. Just listen to Consume Me, Red Letters, and Into Jesus. Most other songs are just as obviously Christian if one takes the time to understand the lyrics.

As for the people talking about the song "Consume Me" being Satanic...please, think before you write something so moronic. (Read "A Music Fan from USA"'s review. He'll set you right.) Plus, it would be totally inconsistent with the rest of everything DC Talk is. Your witch hunts are a waste of time and don't help the gospel. No "satanic" album could ever be such an encourager to my faith as this has.

Buy this album. It's on par with the greatest Christian albums out there, up there with the Exodus CD, Caedmon Call's S/T album, Third Day's S/T album, and Fred Hammond's Pages of Life.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it, but I could sense the "Goodbye" in the albums message, November 19, 2005

I know the kids in the youth group at my church raved about this album probably as much as our parents raved about "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in the Summer of Love in 1967. It was a good follow-up to "Jesus Freak", but I could sense that something was amiss in this album. I feel that alot of it had to be with the fact that all the band members were in their 30's, and probably yearning something more from God than what was the blessings they were recieving already. I feel that was I got out of it; I was into my 30's, and soon enough I'll be in my 40's. I found that this was the end of Contemporary Christian music as I knew it; I started seeing the writing on the wall when the Insyderz released the album "Skallellujah" that same year of 1998, and began everyone on the wagon of doing nothing but praise and worship songs for albums. I do have a couple of favorites like "Since I Met You", and "Consume Me", but then there were some like "Godsend", and "Into Jesus" that left me very melancholy. I know part of why "Into Jesus" left me that way was the fact that "What Have We Become" got considerable airplay around the time "Into Jesus" was released as the first single. I know that the group broke up on good terms, and that's wonderful, and I pray that their spiritual lives are for the better, but it's taken me 7 years to finally say that this album was like a goodbye to me as well. I know that the music scene isn't as fertile as it was almost 10 years ago, but I have to remember that it's all about Jesus, and not a music style, or music trend, and remember to not knock a certain genre because it sounds old and tired, but appreciate any good songs mixed in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Lyrics, January 14, 2006

Supernatural is another great CD by DC Talk. As usual, they have combined superb vocals, great instrumentals, and positive, Christian lyrics.

This CD includes several different genres. Very few groups could pull off such a diverse mix and still have such a fantastic sound. The lyrics are always uplifting and expressely Christian.

There are no bad songs in this collection. There are some that are terrific. I particularly like 'Dive', 'Consume Me', 'Into Jesus', and 'Red Letters'.

If you are not familiar with DC Talk, do yourself a favor and try them. If you are already a fan, but don't have this CD, you will want to get it. 'Supernatural' is another great album to add to any collection. Highly recommended!
