A must for collectors, but otherwise unimportant, October 12, 2009
This review is from: Supernatural: Rising Son (Supernatural (Wildstorm)) (Paperback)
This book continues an, honestly, false backstory for the Winchesters. Origins, Rising Son, and John Winchester's Journal all seemed to have conspired to tell the readers a lot of fun facts, but have in the process forgotten what we are supposed to know from the show itself.
*mild show spoilers*
John might have known a little more than the boys because of his extensive research, but no one really knew anything about Azazel until season two, and nobody (supposedly even Ruby 1.0) knew Lilith even existed until season three...so why does she play such a large part in their lives? If everything that happened in this book was true (meaning Lilith's sudden and striking inclusion in the Winchester family for a long period of time), Sam and Dean should have snapped to action a lot faster the second Ruby 1.0 mentioned her name, because they would have remembered everything she did to them as kids.
For some people this is a side note, but for me it is crucial: everyone is very, VERY out of character. John is too trusting. Dean is too angry, vocal, selfish. Sam is just too damned sad and stupid. They are charicatures of themselves, and it makes for terrible reading.
However, all these complaints are silenced by the inclusion of the short story "The Beast With Two Backs," which show creator Eric Kripke wrote for this comic. It is hilarious (and rather, shall we say, insinuating?)
Overall, I'm glad that I have it because I am a collector of all things Supernatural (I bought that awful movie "Blonde" just to support Jensen Ackles's acting career), but for more casual fans, don't bother. It's pretty useless.

SPN Comic Sequel Ties to the Show's Future, May 21, 2009
This review is from: Supernatural: Rising Son (Supernatural (Wildstorm)) (Paperback)
After SPN: ORIGIN, I have to admit I was going in more than concerned to see how things were going to be handled for the second go round. That's not to say that ORIGIN was bad. It just had a few rough spots involved, mainly with the sketchy artwork. Otherwise, it had a solid story.
The sequel itself is a vast improvement on that front with the most visually put forth artwork in regards to the SPN comics and it does the story justice.
As the story goes, it follows the Winchester family as John struggles to figure out where he fits into the equation, while traveling across country and fighting various entities, while Sam and Dean begin to discover themselves. All the while a rising threat begins to surface seeking out Sam.
If anything this particular story adds a nice touch or two to the whole SPN storyline since John finds himself questioning what Sam truly is, while Dean begins training.
Basically, the whole Winchester family gets the treatment here and we get to see things, that we can't see on TV in regards to creatures and threats.
Overall, one of the best SPN comics out there.

Very enjoyable! Great to finally get some backstory on the Winchesters..., January 20, 2010
This review is from: Supernatural: Rising Son (Supernatural (Wildstorm)) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this, the art was tons better than Origins and the story more enjoyable as well. Eric himself reviewed the story before it was published and also wrote a small additional parody at the end of the book.
There is so much great back story here. Dean is understandably angry as a child but still protective of Sam and jealous of him too. Sam is a child, and makes stupid childish mistakes, you also get to see how early his willful stubborn streak started. He never was good at listening to his Dad.
Mind you, this was written a while ago so keep in mind there may be some factual conflicts with the tv show. I can forgive the conflicts though considering even in the show there are sometimes conflicts.
I definitely recommend this for the Supernatural fan. :)
