5.0 out of 5 stars A Triumph, September 21, 2000

This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
this album is one of the freshest and most cutting edge albums made in years. what a wonderful way to start the new millennium. The epic title track kicks off the album with a massive chorus and one of the coolest bridge/breakdowns i've ever heard. as the album goes on, the melodies grab hold of you. yesterday's taking over & waterfall are genuine pop tracks, while songs like defender & liberation are sheer rock. beautifully intertwined, none of these elements ever conflict. Supernova is consistent with it's approach from start to finish. this records sets high hopes for itself, and absolutely succeeds with what seems to be a seemless harmony of electronic music & pop/rock. lyrically, it is strong and poetic. singer, joey belville has an uncanny talent for tapping into the root of personal loss and abondonment, and turning into hope. something that is not too common in music these days. not only does Supernova flaunt exception song writing, but proves that electronic music can be fun, totally rock, and have deep personal meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars BIGGER THAN SUPERNOVA, ECHOING GREEN DELIVERS., August 31, 2001
By
This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
One of the best CDs I have bought in a long time. One night I was channel surfing on the television and Echoing Greens video "Supernova" was playing on the Christian Channel. It caught my attention quite quickly with the leads vocals, the pop techno infused beats, and the upbeat of lyrics that is so needed in todays pop music world.

The song made me go out and buy the CD, and I was taken away by how great this album is from beginning to end. Every song could be a potential hit single. But unfortunately in America's radio world they limit their airplay to Britney, Backstreet and Christina....YAWN.

Echoing Green is very reminiscent to New Order the 1980s band that brought us "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Perfect Kiss".

Unfortunately because of its Christian overtones it won't get the radio play it deserves, which is a shame because they don't ram Jesus down your throat they talk about prosperity, love and living a life full with positive energy.

Unlike we get in bands today like Marilyn Manson, Staind and Eminem.

"Supernova" gives you everything pop/techno sounds, great vocals and production, positive lyrics and after you play it, it makes you feeeeeeeeel goooooooooooood.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Album (Ever?), October 9, 2000
This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
I am a big Echoing Green Fan. With that said, please understand that I have very high expectations of Joey Belville and co. This album defines and sets the standards for electronirock or alternatronic music. The lyrics are well crafted and inspiring. The music is a beautiful combustion packed with roaring guitars and drums nonetheless, it never deviates from the electronic roots that have brought the band this far. The 6 new songs surpass anything put out by the band with the exception to the classic "Aurora" (reader take note: Aurora is very personal to me- hence the high take on that song) and the new takes on "Thief", "She's Gone Tragic", and "Defender" are mind blowing. The cover of the Anything Box classic "Jubilation" gives the song a whole new dimension and along with "Defender" demands club play. If you buy one album this year, buy this album. You will not regret it. Track for track this could be the best album in my 300+ collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best yet!!!!, April 7, 2003

The best synthpop band ever!!! In my opinion they have never done even one bad song. I think Joey sounds like Kurt Harland from Information Society. I enjoy this band even more when they turn up the guitars a notch instead of keeping them in the background. Wouldn't it be great if they could get radio play and discover a whole new audience but then again it would be only temporary. The american listening public is fickle. Stay true guys and keep the vibe for jesus going!!

5.0 out of 5 stars More mainstream, but still excellent., January 12, 2001
By
This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
Supernova is different, but good. There is a large difference between this album and the past body of work. First of all this is the first release as a band. Two years ago The Echoing Green went from Joey Belville to a full band, this makes a huge difference in the sound. Second this album is more of a "mainstream" release than from their Synthpop roots. There is a lot more guitar and a different feel and sound to this album. On the whole I like this album, but it is different than what I expected. For those of you who like the bands previous releases, maybe the forth coming Music From The Ocean Picture will be more to your likeing. BUT if you are looking for an album with a diverse sound, that appeals to many people, and bring honor and glory to God then pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars As big as a Supernova, February 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
I've tried to get my hands on anything by this band, and by far, this is the best release they've ever had. A must have. Absolutely incredible. A sub-limely positive spin on something that sounds like a cross between Depeche Mode, New Order and Anything Box, with christianity thrown in (subversely) just to make it inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Supernova" demonstrates members' abilities to rock, too., July 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
Since 1998, I have found everything that I could get my hands on by The Echoing Green, and in my opinion, Supernova shows a very energetic and powerful facet that hasn't been shown by The Green, at least as far as I know. Older fans (than me) will find several remixes (such as She's Gone Tragic, Thief and Defender) and some new pieces. Comparable to Skillet's "Invincible," released the same year, the guitars are driven by thumping loops, buzzing background melodies and sweet vocal harmonies. Supernova is a great example of Joey Belville's ability to convey the same song in another context and a different emotional color. This album also demonstrates Joey's versatility in writing, with the aggressive and almost invasive sounds of "Liberation" to Chrissy Franklin singing the worshipful "Nighfall&Splendor." All in all, very good work, best to date from The Echoing Green!

What an interesting album! Normally I don't like electronic music or "techno", but not only is this one of the best electronica albums out there, it's one of the best Christian albums of any genre to come down the pipe in a long time. The Echoing Green, now a complete band rather than one person (I did not know that!), have a sound that mixes the likes of the best house club jams with a savage twist of rock. The rock sound tastes of hints of groups like Stabbing Westward and Nine Inch Nails, and provides a perfect blend. From the first track your blood will pump faster and you'll be singing the choruses before the end. The tracks actually slow down and mellow a little towards the middle of the CD, then furiously pick back up where it left off. The male and female vocals are very melodious and add a wonderful touch to the music. No matter what type of music you like, chances are you'll at least get a kick out of this CD. However, if you're an electronica fan, prepare for a heavenly supercharge. Grab it, drink it in, and share the flavor with your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Echoing Green takes us through space, December 23, 2002
By
Seth Dunkin (Loveland, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Supernova (Audio CD)
They haven't gone on many nation wide tours, but when TEG have toured, they've toured with best-friend band Skillet a lot of the time. And a LOT of people know Skillet. So if you've seen Skillet in concert, you've probably seen TEG too. You just don't remember them. Shame on you.
If you don't know these guys, then you better jump on right now, cause Supernova, TEG's mellenium release, has the power to blow the people down. Though TEG is more lyrically subtle here than Skillet on Invincible (same year release), the techno/rock music will certainly grab your attention. And if you can understand metaphoric poetry lyrics glazed with introspectivity, then these lyrics will throw you out of your seat! The title track paints a picture where one searches the world for happiness in vain, then in blind faith comes across the "Supernova" that is God. "Yesterday's Taking Over" sympathizes with those who are discouraged from Christ's delaying of His return, saying "When it feels like there's no tomorrow...Don't let your dreams come tumbling down". "She's Gone Tragic", TEG's most popular song to date, bears down on the habits many females develope of becoming self-inflictingly "grief addicted" after her heart has been broken ("If there were something that could make her happy/She won't say it, she won't mean it"). The song encourages those females, "There's someone she could run to when it all comes crashing down". "Liberation" is on the same page, lyrically, but musically, it grinds and growls with frustration to bridge over the message of pain the singer feels. Then, on a positive note, ends with "Take this pain and let it go/Freedom comes with eyes wide open/Hope unchained in pure devotion till freedom". "Waterfall" beautifully describes the feeling one has when one realizes he is literally falling in love with God, then without knowing why finds he is willing to do anything for the love of the Creator ("If the only way to you was down/I'd willingly drown to find you there"). "Thief" cleverly reveals the hazards of wasting time making the decision of your destiny. For while you take your time, time itself turns into "an unseen thief" and sneakily makes disappear all you ever loved. "December" is yet another song about letting go of the sadness one might hold on to after a heartbreak ("Don't tell me that it's so worth saving"). Jubilation, a re-make of a song from the eighties, warns listeners not to take life's blessings for granted. "Defender" paints a slightly more different picture of God than we'd expect. We usually see God has someone to guide us, not necessarily defend us. But TEG reminds planet Earth that God is our protector as well. While we struggle on our own, there's an invincible "Defender" waiting to be asked for help. And the ending "Nightfall And Splendor" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. Written by smalltime composer, Jyro Xahn, it is a beautifully built masterpiece. The haunting, soft techno effects, plus the sweet innocence of Chrissy's voice will surely envelope you in a solemn, moving, desperate cry for help from God to heal a seemingly hopeless broken heart. A lyric quotation would never do this song justice. If this song were the only good one on the album, I'd still buy it and I'd still tell you it's worth every penny. I would pay the cost just for that song. In fact I'd pay that much for all but two of the songs (Jubilation and Liberation are personal turn-offs for me).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cd!, August 11, 2001

One of The Echoing Green's songs was on a various artists cd I own which is Hide. I found out which cd it was on which is the self titled cd. I wanted it for Christmas but I got this one instead. I was dissapointed at first but when I listened to it I thought it was cool. It was more rocky then the other cd I wanted but most of the songs on here our more faster and cooler. This group is also christian and they talk about being close to God and keep looking up to him. I like the whole cd but I really like the songs Liberation, Yesterday's taking over, She's Gone Tragic, Jubilation, Defender and Super Nova. If you are into techno rock music you would luv this cd.
