Book Description

May 2004 9 and up4 and upStar Power (Simon & Schuster) (Book 1)

When you're reaching for the stars, nothing can hold you back.

Star Calloway is fourteen years old, and she's the most famous pop star in the world. Her album has topped the charts, her video is all the rage, and she's about to start her world tour. There's only one thing that keeps her life from being perfect: Star's parents and baby brother have been missing for two years, and no one knows what happened to them.

Still, Star knows her family would want her to be happy, and performing means everything to her. But with so many mysterious things going wrong in preparation for the tour, could the show be over before it begins?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7–This new series about a 14-year-old pop star is candy-coated popcorn that some preteens will gobble up. Star, a former unknown who lived in Pennsylvania with her grandmother, has hit the top of the charts. She doesn't seem to practice much. She succeeds easily and has created a family from her adoring manager, her tutor, her bodyguard, her stylist, and her dog. She deals with her parents' and preschool brother's tragic disappearance with sunny optimism that they will be found. If only the detectives that Star has hired could find her family, if the evil media would go away and her jealous rivals wouldn't pull mean-spirited stunts, she could live happily ever after. In the first book, Eddie Urbane, one of her competitors, kidnaps her pug, Dudley Do Wrong. In the second book, the other top reigning pop princess, Jade, and her irascible manager bristle about a comment that Star makes that gets misquoted and media hell breaks loose. It leads to the publicizing of her family's disappearance and adds some necessary tension to these otherwise bland offerings. Readers who don't want to think too much will love these books.–Tina Zubak, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

My daughter read this book in two days - she just loved it. She shared the story with me in great detail and asked if there were any more books like this! I was so happy to see her enjoy it. It's an excellent book for young girls.

A Kid's Review
Star is a huge pop star, she has it all! But her parents and baby brother are missing. This is a really good book, it is great for young girls because star is not stuck up and she is down to earth, it is unlike the a-list which alot of older teens would enjoy. I like star because she is kind and she works hard. Things start to go wrong after a while because someone is trying to reck her tour. 5 stars for star!!
