Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When soap-opera writer Sim can't sleep, it's because she's trying to figure out how to fix her friends' lives. And they need plenty of fixing. Matt and Lucy's wedding is coming up soon, and by the time it arrives, Sim is determined to have reunited Campbell and Eve. It won't be easy because Campbell ditched Eve for Rory. Meanwhile, Sim has her hands full negotiating her boyfriend Francis' foul moods, listening to timid Hazel's concerns, and deflecting unwanted phone calls from Andrew, with whom she had a regrettable fling. And this doesn't even describe half of what's going on. The novel contains a large cast of characters whose lives intermingle, but Hannah deftly manages to keep the multiple plot lines coherent. The story is at times funny and insightful, but some of the characters and events challenge the imagination (Is Vanessa really cold enough to demand a cyclist she hit pay for her car repairs?). Most characters, however, do learn something about themselves by the end, and Sim is sympathetic enough to root for from the start. Beth Warrell

Review

“British novelist Hannah debuts here with a biting, severely realistic George Elliotesque take on a group of late-20s professionals in Cambridge and Yorkshire who totter precipitously on the verge of breakup and calamity.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Funny and insightful.” —Booklist
