Review
"Lively, personal, and outspoken as to the whys as well as the hows of having a Superpuppy, this is a superbook." (
School Library Journal )
Daniel Pinkwater directs readers through every aspect of getting a puppy. As the book begins, the author describes what type of person a dog owner should be, and also points out reasons why a person should get a dog, as well as reasons why some people should not have pets. This sets the tone for the book, which suggests that the author wants people who are getting a dog to be very serious and committed to their decision. Pinkwater explains how to choose the dog best suited for the soon-to-be owner. The suggestions are quite clever and knowledgeable, and the type of suggestions one probably wouldn't otherwise think of. Advice offered includes how and where to find the right dog, dog obedience, grooming, and many more suggestions. Diagrams of children and their dogs appear throughout the book, detailing how to train dogs using several techniques. The illustrations are very simple and easy to follow. Pinkwater supplies the reader with a wide range of information about getting a dog, as well as raising and taking care of the dog. 2002, Clarion Books, (

About the Author
Daniel Pinkwater is crazy about writing, and has been trying to learn how to do it for fifty years. He has written about a hundred books, all but two or three of them good. People who own radios may know Daniel Pinkwater as a popular commentator and children's book reviewer on National Public Radio. At one time, he lived in Los Angeles, went to a fancy private school with the children of movie stars, and ate in The Hat numerous times. He lives with his wife, the illustrator and novelist Jill Pinkwater, and several dogs and cats in a very old farmhouse in New York's Hudson River Valley.
Jill and Daniel Pinkwater have collaborated on many well-loved children's books, including Irving and Muktuk: Two Bad Bears and the Larry series. The Lifeline Theater in Chicago recently launched a new stage play based on these popular books. Daniel Pinkwater is known to NPR-listening, book-buying people around the country for his children's book commentary on Weekend Edition Saturday, on which he and host Scott Simon read aloud from books that Pinkwater selects.
