3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great...
Good album, but missing the energy of some of the previous albums. I think Velvet Touch... is still their best album (although I am dying to get my hands on the Christmas CD). At times, Supersonic Guitars just sounds flat. I also agree with previous reviews that the production isn't as good. Previous LS albums have some snap to them... this one sounds a little muted...

The sound is perfect for the songs! It's supposed to sound cheesy and garagey and cheapononhightecho! Why do you think it's called garage music? Finally, regarding the idiot (see below) who stated that he will burn his favorite tracks and then re-sell the CD--- why don't you burn yourself, instead? With fans like you, who needs critics? Nice way to support a great and truly fun band, guy...Good grief!!!

Overall, this is GREAT, FUN, WIGGLEYOURBUNS stuff --- yeah, not as loud and raucous as previous LS stuff, but who cares?! This is a supercooliciouscheesygreaseburgerfest of an album. So there --- raspberry sounds galore to all of those who just don't get it, and especially to those below who trashed it. If you just want the sameoldsameold, just listen to Classic (puke!) Rock Radio. To the rest of you who appreciate it and want your music to be fun --- cowabunga, baby! Let's don the masks, hit the ropes, and groovydoovy!!! May the Jackets rock 4-ever. Aloha.

P.S. Yes, I am certifiably insane.

These guys really rock, but just not very much on Supersonic Guitars. By yourself an early Christmas present, and see them live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, October 15, 2003
By
First of all, the flat production on Velvet sucked, not this album. This is sixties inspired all the way and the sound fits the songs and mood. I really don't understand how some fans don't appreciate this album unless they haven't given it enough listens. Isn't Love Grand is great, Beach Bag rocks with some truly bitchin' solos, Midnight in Salerno has gotta be one of Danny Amis' best tracks, and the drumming is definately out of control all the way through. The shorter song lengths fit the group better as well, since, let's face it, any album can be tough to sit through all they way, let alone instrumental music. If you like Los Straitjackets, I gurantee you'll like most of this and isn't that worth the 12 bucks?

By the way, to the "fan" that says he'll burn his favorite tracks and sell the disc. No true fan burns a group's cds (especially a low profile band). I'm sure their other discs have provided enough entertaiment to where you can eat the money. Support your local band, jackass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surf's Up Again!, October 5, 2003

This CD shows that no genre ever truly dies. This is instrumental music that recalls the era of the early sixties when groups and instrumentalist such as The Ventures, The Surfaris, Dick Vale, Link Ray and England's Shadows were roaming the charts. In this album one hears the obvious inspirations from such great instrumentals as; Pipeline, Wipeout, Telstar, Apache and Sleepwalk. If you like any of the artist or songs mentioned above then this CD is a real treat.

Los Straightjackets make an obvious attempt to recreate this era by staying close to the essence. Songs are mostly performed with lead/rhythm/Bass guitar/drums with a little sax added here and there. The songs average about 2 minutes each with simple melodies (no intricate lead work). Although this CD was released in 2003 and was recorded in the digital age, the sound is kind of thin and sounds like it's coming out of a cheap transistor radio speaker, just like this kind of music should and always did. I read a couple of reviewers that cited the "poor quality" of sound and I believe that the group probably deliberately mixed it that way. This in order to recreate an era when music was often heard that way; at least that's my theory. Of course, if you have grown up with stereo systems and boom boxes, I can understand why this would sound weird. I have not listened to music through a transistor radio for a very long time.

I understand, from reading other reviewers that this band puts on quite a lively show, performing in mask accompanied with go-go dancers and that theirs are highly spirited events. I can't wait to see them. The CD art can be viewed in 3-D (glasses are provided in the CD), a very unique presentation.

Fans of instrumental rock music may also want to check out any of the latest albums by such artists as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and of course Jeff Beck. The music by those artists is of course much more sophisticated than the basic surf music played here and features intricate musical pieces, extended technically proficient solos (sometimes played a t blinding speed), and modern production techniques. These artist also incorporate elements of blues, jazz, classical and occasionally electronica in their music. Never-the-less, the roots of this moderm music are found in the simple instrumentals played on this CD. I think that Los Straightjackets is doing this music with a tongue-in- cheek approach and as a novelty which is stilla lot of fun However, I bet that they are not as naïve as they appear and that the talent is there to join the likes of the current pioneers of instrumental music mentioned above.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! (so not all surf music sounds the same after all!!), September 23, 2003
These guys always deliver the goods. Each release is always worth grabbing and for a genre that is naturally rooted in the past they manage to keep things fresh and try out new ideas and twists on their sound. This time it's a down an' dirty and groovy as hell production that brings the twist, and while the geetars are as exciting as ever it those crazy voodoo beats that steal the show for me!(esp. track 5) If this disc don't make you wanna wiggle like you got a stick up ya wazoo see your doctor quick- you may well be dead!
Any fan of Los Straitjackets knows they love a hot band with a great image and great gimmicks- this time you get a 3D pick your own cover (great portraits of the band) with 3D specs included! looks great, sounds even better!
Some people like their fave bands to give them the same album again and again. Wise boys and girls know surprises and mixing it up are how fantastic bands stay fantastic. One of the coolest releases this year from one the finest and most rewarding acts on the planet. Splendid. Full instrumental brain candy agogo!

(tasty guest appearences from DJ and Billy from X & Jon Spencer too)

4.0 out of 5 stars I got mine autographed by Danny Amis!, November 17, 2003

This is another fine instrumental rock album from the modern masters of the genre. Some may call it "surf music", but it really isn't. They don't play the kind of guitars typically found in a surf band, and their music is more eclectic than your average surf band. Their is certainly a surf influence here, but they seem to be more influenced by non-surf intrumental bands, like the Ventures and Davie Allen & the Arrows. Anyway, this album is a lot of fun and will be enjoyed by fans of good time instrumental rock and roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs vocals?, September 26, 2003

I just picked up Supersonic Guitars In 3-D and man, what an album! The Fender amped lucha libre boys really kick some reverb ass with this one! After opening with the speaker shredding "Squid", Eddie Angel and Pete Curry switch instruments for an ode to the makers of their matching guitars and basses in "DiPinto Twist".
"Can You Dig It?" just sweats of COOL, and time ACTUALLY goes backward during the intro of "San Diego Shutdown" (watch the timer on your CD player and you'll know what I mean).
Eddie Angel penned a great early beatle-esque tune with "Isn't Love Grand?" and listen for smiling Billy Zoom from X playing flute on "Giggle Water". Other standouts are "Midnight in Salerno", and the relaxing "Dreamland" but in my book "Galaxy Drive" could quite possibly be the most difinitive song in Los Straitjackets history.
I was lucky enough to catch them at Spaceland in L.A. a couple days ago, a truly intimate setting, small club, small crowd, partied with Danny, Jimmy, Pete, and Eddie,(they're all very nice). And I bought myself a mask too! Check 'em out!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Straitjackets have done it again.., September 21, 2003

Los Straitjackets have made another fine musical creation. This
album is a musical must for any Straitjacets fan. The 3-d glasses are creative plus the "u-pick" cover gives you the chance to pick the cover you like best. Musically the boys have not missed a beat. New producer but same results: Fantastic
music from the 4 masked men. They even throw you a curve ball by letting the bass player play lead guitar on Dipinto Twist. Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake from the famed band, X play on the album so need I say more? Great album, great band, great music.

Another groovy trip by the 'jackets! I first discovered them through an NPR review of their Christmas album. 'Supersonic' is even better than 'Viva' and 'Velvet Touch, although all are great. Supersonic has the same jaunty, rockin' feelin' that makes you want to jump in your hot rod and cruise the strip...any strip! My favorite keep-hitting-the-repeat-button track? #5, "San Diego Shutdown." That drum solo is pure hip swingin' bliss. Enjoy! The only low point of the album: instant headache from the 3-D glasses.
