5.0 out of 5 stars one of the all-time worst superhero movies March 22, 2014

You think Supergirl, the 1990 Captain America or Roger Corman's Fantastic Four were bad? Well plunk this DVD into your player and see just what "bad" really means! Fortunately for us, bad = hilarious! Those wacky Italian filmmakers, always looking for some American film craze to rip off, leeched onto the superhero genre when the original Chris Reeve Superman movies were making their first go-rounds at the box office. One of several anemic results that washed up on our shores in poorly-dubbed form was this side-splitting schlock fest.

SUPERSONIC MAN's "story" concerns an alien civilization who sends a savior named Kronos to Earth, who takes the human identity of mustachioed "Paul" to help save us from the evil Dr. Gulik (the always great Cameron Mitchell). Whenever danger threatens, Paul uses a hi-tech watch gizmo to transform himself into SUPERSONIC MAN by speaking the inspiring phrase: "May the Great Force of the Galaxy be with me!" Oddly enough (or maybe not), SUPERSONIC MAN is played by a totally different guy: a hulking, knuckle-dragging, non-mustachioed body builder in spangly tights with a dorky half mask / wet-hair towel thingy plunked on his head. He can perform super-duper feats of strength, like lifting up steam rollers made of cardboard (I swear to God! You have to see it to believe it!), flying about and so forth, all while an irritating Casio keyboard theme plays over and over (and over!) in the background. Ugh! I LOVE IT!!!

The second film in this double feature disc is WAR OF THE ROBOTS. This wonderful mess is yet another Star Wars-themed rip-off, the likes of which where cranked out by Italian movie studios seemingly by the dozens in the late 70's-early 80's.
