2.0 out of 5 stars Definetly loses something in the remix version April 13, 2014
I purchased the 1985 Yesterday Once More best-of compilation when it was first released on CD, which included relatively minor tweaks to the original versions of the Carpenters' hits. I copied the songs to mp3 later on, and those are the versions I have always listened to. I got the urge to replace that older CD compilation with a newer one, but I was concerned about remixes, especially when it was mentioned by one reviewer on the 1969-1981 collection that Superstar was more or less butchered. Superstar is my favorite Carpenters' song, and I downloaded it elsewhere to see if it was really that "bad." Now, if you hadn't heard the song in years, or just listen to it off a speaker, you probably won't notice anything too different, but if you listen to your music through headphones and are used to listening to something close to the original version, you will be annoyed (or should be) by the 1991 remix version. It is true that there is more separation, but that is not necessarily a good thing. Karen's voice often seems placed in the background, and at times the piano actually seems to play over her voice in a rather disconcerting manner. The "charm" of this song was Karen's haunting vocal front and center, and here it seems that Richard just wants to make sure you know he's responsible for the production, so he puts the instruments and string arrangements at odd angles to make sure you hear them "clearly." He also apparently adds additional instrumentation when the oboe and French horns do just fine in setting the somber tone. Apparently the only place to hear the original versions of these songs are on the studio albums they first appeared on, not the latest collections.

Such an amazing and beautiful song, one of the best songs by the Carpenters! Karen's voice never fails to present an outstanding amount of emotion through every note she sings. I can't think of a more perferct song to buy! The Mp3 download was quick, virus free, and caused no trouble to my computer.
