Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

You'll laugh, you'll cheer! A new queen of comedy is born! - Earl Dittman, Wireless Magazine Saturday Night Live star Molly Shannon brings her popular character Mary Katherine Gallagher to the big screen in this hilarious comedy romp. All schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher (Shannon) wants in life is a kiss. Not just any kiss, mind you -- a big-time, hold-your-breath-'til-you-think-you're-gonna-faint, Hollywood-style kiss. But no matter how hard she tries, no one will kiss her. Mary Katherine decides that the only way she's ever going to get what she wants is to become just like the people she sees getting those kisses in the movies. And when Catholic Teen Magazine sponsors a talent contest at her school, Mary Katherine just might make her dreams come true...and become a Superstar! Costarring Will Ferrell (A Night at the Roxbury).

5.0 out of 5 stars A super star for "Superstar" ! July 31, 2005
Format:DVD
I love this movie! I bought it so I could watch it whenever I need a good laugh. It doesn't have a dull moment in the whole movie. Superstar is definately a "LOL" film. The characters are well chosen, and play their parts great. And who could refuse yet another movie with Will Ferrel?! All in all, I give "Superstar" a Super Star! No pun intended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Movie Ever March 11, 2000
By Matt
Format:DVD
Superstar has got to be one of my favoritest movies of all time. There are great comedy scenes with Mary and a tree that are just hilarious. This movie stars one of the funniest people in the whole world...Molly Shannon aka Mary Katherine Gallagher! This is a great movie for the whole family and I would recommend this move to everyone who needs a good laugh!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best comedy I've seen in awhile -- a keeper May 12, 2005
Format:VHS Tape
I'm not usually a fan of the comedy genre -- especially the Hollywood variety. Yet for some reason, I love this movie, and have seen it three times in the week I've rented it. Molly Shannon is absolutely brilliant, and her performance is genuinely funny and at times, touching. Even though this movie does rely on Hollywood conventions (like mawkish, one-dimensional romance) and is silly beyond its own goal (that ridiculous God spectacle that "guides" Mary), it redeems itself through the hilarious tree-smooching scenes, which are priceless, as well as many others. I'd recommend this film to anyone who wants to chill out and have a laugh -- even if you think Hollywood comedy isn't for you. This is a keeper.
