Grade 3-5-Following an introductory chapter that discusses the blossoming of soccer interest in the U.S., this title examines the careers of four international players-Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Johann Cruyff, and Diego Maradona. Young fans will be interested in the story behind Pele's first taste of success at age 17 and the reason for Maradona's ejection from the 1982 World Cup in Mexico. The author also adds other tidbits of information including the beginning of announcer Andres Cantor's famous "Goooal!" call. Action-packed black-and-white photographs are interspersed throughout the text. The final chapter predicts the future success of some current players. However, this title was written before the outcome of the 1998 World Cup, thus dating it. Some awkward or run-on sentences will require re-reading, thus relegating this book to a supplemental position behind Dale Howard's Soccer Stars (Children's, 1994).
