From the back cover:
A ranger's heart...
Beautiful young Billie Bahill was determined. Despite what her father said, she knew her fiance wouldn't just leave her. So come hell or high water, she was going to go find him. So what if he rode off into the deadly Superstition Mountains? Billie was as good as any of the men of her father's ranch, and she wouldn't let anybody stop her--especially not the Arizona Ranger with eyes that made her heart skip a beat.
Ranger Sam Gray was on the trail of a pair of killers. But when he found the fiesty tomboy alone in the Superstitions, he knew he had to bring her back home for her own good--no matter how hard she fought him. Same was used to gunmen shooting at him, but he soon realized he faced a new kind of danger with Billie--the danger of losing his heart.
And my review:
SUPERSTITIONS was an okay read. There was nothing outstanding about it, and nothing horrible either. In the glutted market of historical western romances, this one is nothing special. I did enjoy the way the author used the true legend of the lost Dutchman mine in this story, but that's about the only part that was unique in any way.
This story doesn't feel cliched or overdone, but it also doesn't break any new territory, romance-novel wise. The hero doesn't develop much beyond his initial description of a hardened, honorable lawman with a tortured past. The heroine is fiesty without being a shrew (a feat not many authors are able to manage), so I applaud McKnight on her heroine.
However, the romance wasn't very moving in this book. The emotions just didn't ring true, even when each of the characters finally realizes that it's love. I just didn't feel it. Maybe that's because the characters weren't as well-rounded as they could have been. I didn't feel fully invested in their lives, so their romance didn't capture me the way a good romance should.
Also, the "I love you's" were a looong time in coming, and the heroine was just a little bit too stubborn by the end, which made me a little annoyed with her when I finished the book. And that's not really the note you want to end on. I felt that the romance in this story really suffered because the author used more pages to advance the suspense plot than she used for the relationship.
If you have nothing else to read, then this book will keep you mildly entertained for a few hours. But it's not a story that's going to stay with you very long after you turn that final page. If you want a story that fully engages your emotions, SUPERSTITIONS is not going to satisfy you.

This is the first book I've read by Annie McKnight and it won't be my last. The author has a flair for engaging the reader in spellbinding characters and seductive romance. The desert comes alive along with this compelling story.
