Superstructs Super Set

I'm just ordering our third set of these for my daughter (8), my sons (ages 6,4,2) and my husband(an engineer). They play with them nearly constantly and the range of creations possible is nearly infinite. We are a family that enjoys construction/building toys and have dozens of different sets.. I'd say Superstructs has reigned as #1 since we got them last year.

They are less breakable than Tinker Toys (no splinters!), and hold up really well to everything but being chewed by our boxer dog, so a very sturdy and well made toy.

Great for getting children to think outside the box and a very fine multi use toy. We've seen airplanes, cars, trucks, buildings, dolls, robots, aliens, strollers, pretend hats.. you name it. The mark of a truly great toy is that it can be played with in many ways. Superstructs is such a toy.
Buy it, play with it, and enjoy!

Our 3 year old has had Wedgits and Magneatos and loves those. We debated about which Superstructs set to purchase and went with the largest one which was a wise move. Superstructs were a huge hit. They are holding up well despite rough, daily use. The only improvement I would like to see is in the consruction of the container. After three months it is starting to fall apart. I would have gladly spent a bit more to get a better storage container. Other than that, they are a great toy that fosters hours of imaginative play for the entire family. We will be adding to the set soon.

Some folks have had problems with durability, I have seen none. My wife does day care, and these sets have been tested by quite a few kids. No breaking of struts when taking apart as some have reported. And this is through a variety of kids.

This is a great toy. We are ordering our third set now as two sets is not enough for these kids!

This toy is equally played with by my 4,6 and 8 year old (a girl). We own Lego, Playmobil, K'nex, Gears, etc. and this is one they consistently go to! We have had the set over almost a year and the kids have yet to make anything using the directions....everything is free form. Friends visiting with their 11 and 13 year old boys had just as much fun playing with it so the toy really covers a big age range starting with a 3 year old. Very durable as we haven't had a broken piece yet! My favorite toy constructed is a lawnmower.

I got this for my 4-year-old boy.
He made the ferris wheel following the instruction included in the set. He was very proud of himself for such an accomplishment. However, when he tried to take it apart, the sticks started to crack at their ends. I tried it and I broke a few too. Apparently you have pull the sticks "straight" out. If you wriggle them to loosen, the sticks crack. It is not as durable as it should be.

The box says ages 4+ - but our 3 year old son LOVES this set. There are lots of building options and he is old enough to put the pieces together himself. It's never boring because there is always something new to build!

Tinkertoys were my favorite as a kid and I wanted to get them for our children as well. I actually ordered both the Superstructs and the Tinkertoys. Although I really like wooden toys and would prefer them most of the time over plastic, I ended up taking back the Tinkertoys instead of these.

I was surprised at the diameter of the rods and holes. Some websites said these were interchangeable with Tinkertoys and I thought that meant they were about a pencil size in diameter, but they are about double that instead, as are the new Tinkertoys.

My 2 year old loves to build and play like this but the rods are very difficult for her to firmly put in the holes. This is unfortunate but she will figure it out in time.

This is a classic toy that teaches so much about problem solving, creativity, how to follow directions, even just depth perception for young kids, etc!

My only real complaint is that these are made in China. I had to call the company to find out. (Tinkertoys are also made in China....just like just about everything else we want to buy on the market these days!!!)

Our grandkids love these! We ordered a set for home, and two sets as gifts for the kids. The kids can build different items, thanks to the detailed, pictured instructions that are totally understandable at a kid level. Great service from the supplier.

A few significant issues:

- String for crane was way too short to build as instructed.
- Number of pieces provided for some things conflict with instructions which tell you that you need more than they give you. Better be a McGyver or your kid will be unhappy.
- Pieces that need to fit snugly together don't, so the finished product (like race car) can't be moved or touched or it falls apart.
- sticks are fragile. If you don't pull them exactly straight out of holes when dis-assembling the ends of the sticks crack. I don't know about your 5 YO's ability to pull stuff exactly straight out, but mine doesn't quite get that. And in some configurations, it is impossible even for an adult. Needless to say, it is breaking after only a few uses.

Net-net: if your kid wants to build something and put it on the shelf and never touch it or never re-use to build something else, this is a good kit. If they actually are a kid and want to play with it, then look elsewhere.

My 5 yr old son enjoys playing with this. Very durable. Has tuaght how to read instructions visually, though some complex pictures should have written instructions as well. The crane took 4 adults and a lot of hours to figure out. Otherwise very happy and prefers over Gears and Tinkertoys.
