Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 1-2. Captain Underpants seems sophisticated next to the Supertwins, the redheaded twin superheroes who star in their own Scholastic Reader series of paperbacks. In the fourth Supertwins story, Timmy and Tabby must save the day when the "sneaky, slimy book worms" make off with the entire school's books. (To eat? To slime? To hide? It's unclear.) In a somewhat incomprehensible proclamation, the head worm cries, "Kids can't learn without books. They will forget everything. Then . . . we will take over the world!" Tabby hates worms, but she still manages to shrink them by shooting sunbeams out of her hands. Once the worms are banished to a small jar, the twins return the books to the school. Demarest's colorful cartoons of the giant, green-toothed book worms and their knee-high nemeses are as over-the-top as the story. An appended reading fluency test calls out new vocabulary words and similarly spelled words in this slim, somewhat perplexing book with high gross-out value. Karin Snelson

More About the Author

I grew up outside of Philadelphia, a town I portrayed all my thoughts and feelings about in Pure Sunshine and the short story Filthadelphia. When I was eighteen, I moved to New York City where I stayed for ten years. You can read about my impressions of that city in both Tomorrow, Maybe and Thief. For the suburban experiences of my life, check out Perfect World and Dirty Liar.

Needless to say, ten years in Manhattan is more than enough. It was time to pack up and head for the peace and quiet of the middle of nowhere. Alas, I ended up in the Woodstock area of upstate New York. An area aptly portrayed in my book Zombie Blondes.

My fascination with writing started in childhood with the notion of making up stories. I loved action figures as a kid. Actually, I still do and still collect them. But as a child, I would set up my entire bedroom like the stage for one epic story that I would play out for days. I didn't know it at the time, but it was the basis for what I do now. I was also a stuffed animal kid. I had dozens and they all had names and they all personalities. Basically, they were characters. Writing isn't very different than playing. It's just a grown up way of doing it.

Timmy and Tabby are twins who have secret powers and are superheros known as The Supertwins. One day the twins go to school and are informed by their teacher that all the books in the classroom have been taken by the Book Worms to be cleaned. Every class in the school is the same way. So, the students are dismissed until the books are returned. Timmy and Tabby know that it's a job for The Supertwins. They have to travel into the school's basement to locate the Book Worms and foil their sinister plot.

This book is an enjoyable and exciting story. Through it's telling, it includes some basic scientific facts about worms. Also, at the end of the book there is a short vocabulary exercise to help students practice bigger words that they might not be familiar reading. Recommended for K-2nd grade readers or adults who like children's literature (like myself).
