4.0 out of 5 stars Okay, so what's the point?
I played drums on Over The Garden Wall's version of Firth Of Fifth. I agree that there is no point in releasing a CD of cover songs that are pretty much identical to the original, but let me explain. We were a bonafide Genesis Tribute Band! We prided ourselves on our ability to entertain people and make them feel that they were actually seeing and hearing the Genesis...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing tribute to Genesis
Most tribute albums are disappointing, and this one marches proudly right into that rank. I can understand why it would be a good musical learning experience to recreate the 9-minute-long "Firth of Fifth" note for note. What I can't understand is who thought ANYONE would want to pay for a slavish remake when they had the original Genesis version to listen to. The song...

I played drums on Over The Garden Wall's version of Firth Of Fifth. I agree that there is no point in releasing a CD of cover songs that are pretty much identical to the original, but let me explain. We were a bonafide Genesis Tribute Band! We prided ourselves on our ability to entertain people and make them feel that they were actually seeing and hearing the Genesis from the past. When we were asked to contribute to this CD, we literally had to record and mix the song in ONE day with 2 or 3 takes, and NO click track. We did not have any time to work out a clever arrangement or approach. Looking back on it now, we probably should have just said, "Why bother?" but we figured that this CD would help us get more gigs.

Our version sort of combined the studio release with the live Genesis version.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Breathe New Life Into Some Great Old Tunes, January 6, 2000

Buy this disc for the late Kevin Gilbert's cover of "Back In NYC" if nothing else. (ps: how did he die?) Robert Berry is truely the MASTER of rearranging if not rewriting progressive music. He makes the tunes he re-does his own. Get the ELP tribute "Encores, Legends and Paradoxes" Robert Berry (who toured with Emerson and Palmer in Three) has a vested interest in keeping progressive music in the forefront, and he obviously has a great love of the medium. Back to Kevin Gilbert: Thanks for putting trombone licks into your contribution. If you are a true fan of music, beyond the realm of the formula, I certainly suggest you check this great disc out... PS: it's one o'clock and time for absorbing some new lawn mowing sounds. When the sun beats down and I'm lying on the bench, thank God I am hearing the continuation...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good collection., December 5, 1998

There are a lot of "tribute" albums around but some of the best have been the Yes, Genesis and Rush tribute albums on the Magna Carta label. One of the other reviewers makes the point that a lot of the bands are relatively unknown but I think this is a plus - these people are Genesis fans and whether or not you think these covers are good they are done because the musicians play this kind of music on their own albums. Special mention for cover versions beyond the call of duty goes to Enchant and Magellan. The bands here take very different approaches - some are almost note for note covers, others are quite different to the original. I would find it very unlikely any one would regularaly listen to the whole album every time - but this is well worth adding to your collection. And then buy some of these bands own CDs and hear the kind of music Genesis themselves haven't made for a decade.

The song selection here is good, but most of the musicians don't vary a hair from the original arrangements (except that the singers all appear to be auditioning for Journey). This shouldn't be so hard--why not a reggae version of "Counting Out Time"? A grunge guitar "Stagnation"? A medley of "Say It's Alright, Joe" and "Twilight Alehouse"? Anyone ever notice that the organ riff in "The Knife" would make a great polka beat? A few tracks are at least listenable: Annie Haslam (Renaissance) does a pleasant take on "Ripples" and Richard Sinclair (Caravan) does the same for "For Absent Friends", but really these are safe renditions of safe song choices. Kevin Gilbert throws a little variation into "Back in NYC" (a punk song that pre-dated punk by a couple of years), and Crack the Sky does the same for "I Know What I Like".

Covers of classic genesis by other progressive bands. Listening to others takes on these is fun.

At the time I bought this I didn't know all the artist but made a apoint to and you should to. Other reviews have been negtive but I find no merit in their words. Even if the musicians played note for note Genesis(they didn't) this CD has the benefit of better sound production than the org. Yes I have the org. ATCO releases plus the artist all have better voices than PG and PC (Love them though)! The fact is that for the most part all do renewed versions beautifully. As others said some of the standouts are Kevin Gilbert,Enchant,Magellan,Cairo. Get this and check out all the wounderful artist own bands Shadow Gallery etc.Pick up Magna Carta's tribute to Rush also. Progressive Rock Lives today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some interesting spin on some old Genesis, June 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Supper's Ready: A Tribute To Genesis (Audio CD)
Lord only knows who most of these bands are. However they do some great covers of some great Genesis music. Kevin Gilbert's version of Back in N.Y.C, Magellan's take on Mama and Pete Bardens "Mirage" version of Many too Many are excellent. Lord only knows why name bands have not done covers of these songs!

É o melhor tributo ao Genesis com presença de Annie Haslam (Renaissance) entre outros. O repertório é bom, arranjos bem feitos e boa gravação. Vale à pena!

2.0 out of 5 stars Fan's #1 Request - Don't Screw it Up, January 30, 2010
This review is from: Supper's Ready: A Tribute To Genesis (Audio CD)
There are songs that should never be re-interpreted or covered, and if released as a tribute, should not shame the original work.

I was in several bands, I'm no stranger to criticism, so I'm just going to be blunt. The Carpet Crawlers is one of the most beautiful songs sung by Peter Gabriel, and it is not a challenge to be taken lightly. The singer on this tribute is not soulful, morose, soft and lovely, but is instead whiny and in no way soothing. More importantly, they somehow turned it into a whiny soft-rock song with soprano - I booooo you. I mean, wow. I appreciate that the singers are not English, and maybe there are cultural differences, but once I heard the strings kick in, that was it. Fail. Epic. Irredeemable.

I condemn this cover, equate it with the ET video game of the 1980's, and wash my hands of it.
