Take Better Care of Yourself - Read This Review,

This review is from: Supplement Your Prescription: What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutrition (Paperback)
The Author, Dr. Hyla Cass, has focused most of her attention on main stream prescription drugs and the nutrients they destroy - and how to replace these nutrients. While Dr Cass doesn't think much about taking supplements first - to avoid medications that mainly treat only symptoms - the readers should consider such possibilities. It also may be that Dr. Cass's other books explore this area. I haven't read any of her other books.
Her recommending the American DASH Diet (except for the high volume of breads and grains that DASH recommends), Dr. Cass also mentions the value of some other popular diets and exercise. She is good to mention these thiings - really good! I especially like it that this book is organized so that the reader need only read the first two easy reading chapters and then skip the chapters that follow - except the ones that describe the medical conditions and drugs that interest the reader most. For example, if your not even at risk from diabetes, readers can skip that chapter and just go to the chapters that focus on disease they are being treated for. But the whole book is a good read. It is only 184 pages - including the index. It is to the point. No long narratives and no boring patient testimonials. One thing, however, the reader should keep in mind that much of the suggested dietary remedies have not had a lot of scientific double blind testing. That's one reason most doctors ignore these types of remedies. The trouble is that there is no profit motive to inspire such research - not to prevent disease or to complement prescription medicine. Financial profit is the Motor driving not only the medical industry but almost all industry. Can you imagine, for example, a dentist telling you that if you do such and such you only need to come in for routine check-ups once every TWO years? I think not! Having been in good health all my senior years, I have taken, and experienced substantial benefits, from only three food supplements (Fish Oil, a balanced Vitamin/mineral tablet, and extra Vitamin D). For this reason I cannot attest to the efficacy of most food supplements. I would stress that my past experience with prescription and over-the-counter drugs has been dismal. At age 72 I no longer take any prescription medication or OTC drug. Instead, I eat carefully chosen and simply prepared food. (No to added salt or added sugar - and NO to restaurants.) I exercise and walk a lot. And I accept all human behavior as caused by a multitude of prior events (therefore having no sin and no fault - and no need to upset myself). I mind my own business and think little about problems that I cannot even begin to solve. I also enjoy and share my hobby of photography. All this has my blood pressure hovering around 115/75, weight 150, and I experience minimal aches and pains. And, oh yea, I never married so I don't have a woman tempting me with fattening foods, boring me with gossip, and perpetually making demands. I have the illusion of being free and thus a very large measure of happiness. I owe all of this to myself for daring to think outside of the conformity box. You can do the same. "Supplement Your Prescription . . ." would make a fairly decent starting point. I write to be helpful to readers, more than to praise a good doctor.

This review is from: Supplement Your Prescription: What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutrition (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by my mother, who researches everything thoroughly. I take various medications for various conditions and had no idea what other effects they were having on me until I read this book. What an eye-opener! Anyone who has been prescribed medications should review the information Dr. Cass has given. It will be a smoother ride to the management of and recovery from their illnesses.
