Parents of Teenagers - a must read!, September 1, 2009
This review is from: Supporting Adolescents (Pamphlet)
Patty Wipfler has nailed it in this brief but extremely helpful pamphlet. I was agonizing over how to handle my 16 y.o. daughter's anger at me - she simply shut down when she got mad at me, for several days. This book helped me relax and not take it personally, and then be there for my daughter when she was ready to unload. Throughout the six days of silence, I offered to meet with her to discuss it, in a gentle, kind way. Since she was avoiding me, I tried texting. Finally, when the red hot emotion subsided, she said she was ready to talk, and I sat and listened while she unloaded dozens of complaints about me, and her life. Again, I had to pinch myself not to take it personally. I processed her specific complaints afterwards, but just listened to her rant and rave. The next day, things were amazingly calm and peaceful, and she was chipper and ready to engage again, and treated me as if nothing had ever happened. It was a transformation, thanks to this book.
