Every adoptive family should have 2 copies of this book.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Supporting an Adoption (Paperback)
This short, readable book gets straight to the point: Friends and Family often undermine adoptive parents' authority and parental role during the adjustment and attachment process. This causes immediate and long-term problems when we are building an attachment with children who have special attachment needs. This book explains what family and friends should expect during an adoption, how they can help, and how they can stay out of the way when there are problems. It explains some of the health, emotional and behavioral issues that are common to newly adopted children which are different from usual childrearing concerns. Adopted children need prepared and well-supported parents -- it is their most important special need. We NEED for our friends and family to understand what to expect, and this short book is perfect to help get the message through to those who may try to dismiss our concerns at a time when we need their understanding the most. I recommend this book to everyone who knows an adoptive family. I often tell my new adoptive-parent friends to buy 2 or 3 copies, one to keep and the others to hand out when needed. (I didn't get paid to say that, really!)

Adoptive families must have several of these,
By Jana (Louisiana) - See all my reviews

I bought several of these books for us, and our extended family. They're very informative and help the reader to understand special issues that face hopeful adoptive parents. Until I began my walk down the adoption path, I never thought that little things I'd comment on to others would be hurtful. We just don't realize what we say, or we often say things with the best intentions that are interpreted as rude to an adoptive family. This is a must have for all families traveling down the road to adoption. It will help your friends and relatives to understand (in a good way)why you've made the decision you have, and how best to support you with the decision you've made.

Supporting an Adoption,

This booklet is very informative. We ordered several to share with close family, friends, and our church family. I would recommend it in helping educate others about your adoption.
The only down side is that some information won't be specific to your situation.

book is slightly dated. helpful for someone just beginning the adoption process to share with family/friends, but otherwise not something I would recommend.

Found this to be a waste of money. I was looking for something for supportive families who want to know what they can do to be supportive and prepare for the arrival of a domestically adopted newborn. There is a checklist of do's and dont's that would be helpful for them, but beyond that I found it to be out of touch. After all, adoption has changed quite a bit since this was written. I knew that, but took a chance anyway. Wasn't worth it.

I bought this book in 2000. Several copies, actually... The information was important and easily accessible to the people that I knew. And I haven't since found a similar resource that is as good. However, the print quality leaves something to be desired. I was clearly originally typed on a simple word processor or a typewriter and then photocopied. I found it to be off-putting. And felt like the cost was too high given the clear low-cost production. Nonetheless, the information was important and I'm glad I bought it. If you're starting the adoption process now, it's worth a look... See if it's as helpful to you as it was to me.
