What a great book!,

I just bought this book for the March MPRE, and I would highly recommend it to other law students! This book was far more concise than the Bar/Bri materials, taking you directly to the point of what you need to know for the exam. It also includes all of the released questions from past MPRE exams, together with an explanation of all the correct answers! You won't find that from Bar/Bri, folks. The DVD is also somewhat helpful, and will take you step by step through both the outline and the sample problems (although I did find the recitation of the outline, which cannot be skipped, to be a bit tedious).
In sum, I felt confident and thoroughly prepared for the MPRE after reading this book. Now, the actual exam was somewhat random, but I think I did perfectly well with just this book alone. I had the Bar/Bri at hand, but didn't even end up using it, since I was so much more impressed by Supreme MPRE. Highly recommended! UPDATE: Just got back my score report and I managed a whopping 134 out of 150 on the MPRE, using almost only this book and DVD and studying half-heartedly for a few hours a day over the course of 3 days! Well worth the price!

As other reviewers have pointed out, this guide is not very comprehensive, but it covers enough to get a passing score and the price is right ($40 when I wrote this). If you paid for BAR/BRI full bar review, you get their materials for free, but this is a solid alternative, especially if you don't want to put a lot of time into the MPRE. The outline is short and sticks to commonly tested subjects. The sample problems and explanations are great. I saw at least four questions (of 50) on the MPRE that were repeated and several others that were similar.
There were some questions that were complete surprises to me. My classmates who used BAR/BRI said they were also surprised, so I don't think Supreme can be faulted for that. BAR/BRI is more comprehensive, however. I definitely recommend some kind of prep, though, because the test can be tricky and they don't track particular states' rules exactly (I'm from a Texas law school and there are significant differences from our rules). Supreme is good if you want a crash course and the DVD means you don't have to worry about scheduling around the one lecture BAR/BRI offers. Edit (9/5/06): I got a scaled score of 119 out of 150 (needed 85 to pass) after using this book for 1 day. Primarily I just did the practice problems and answers. Didn't watch the DVD. Couldn't use BAR/BRI because they rescheduled the lecture at the last minute. My score seems to be higher than my classmates,' which is unusual, so I would give this 5 Stars now.

Semi-Valuable Snoozefest,

Just about anything that summarizes the material appearing on the MPRE can be helful. In that sense, this study tool earns a few stars. You get some practice questions and an outline. If you haven't taken Professional Responsibility (or Legal Ethics) then you'll definitely need something like this. Even if you did take a course it might not be clear which material will be on the MPRE. This will help you know what to memorize. The presentation is absolutely horrible though. It's just soooo boring (the DVD in particular) and not very in-depth. On the plus side, however, it is extremely cheap compared to some alternatives.

Brief and to-the-point,

This is a good resource that gets you through the basics in record time. First, you read through the 38-page outline. Second, you watch the included DVD and follow along in the outline (about 4-5 hours). The dude on the DVD isn't incredibly entertaining, but he gets the job done without putting you to sleep. Third, you take the included 150 sample questions. I took them in 50 question installments to get as close to the real exam's format as possible. If you are studying for the MPRE, you don't want to get too bogged down in details. This study guide doesn't have too many details. CAVEAT: If you buy this study guide, do not buy the MBE's official "Released Questions." The official released questions are the exact questions included within this study guide. Save the $17. Don't be an idiot like me and order both.
UPDATE: Scored a 131 on the March 2007 exam. I'm so ethical.

Excellent At Home MPRE Study Guide,

I took the March 2007 MPRE Exam, which was quite difficult and seemed to have all new questions. I only used the Supreme Bar Review course, in preparation for the exam. I watched the DVD two times and reviewed all of the example questions and answers several times. Even though the exam was very comprehensive, I felt I had the preparation necessary to successfully complete the exam. I was very pleased with the results. My scaled score was 112, which is well above average and meets the requirements of any state bar in country. I highly recommend this course and strongly suggest that you consider it over any of the more expensive courses and/or purchase of lists of previous questions.

Utter Trash, nobody should buy this product ever again after me,

Complete trash, do NOT waste your money, do NOT listen to other reviews--exam was NOTHING like these questions, what crap. In fact, I just came back to make sure this review of mine was posted to Amazon so nobody else would buy this book again, and in the process I noticed people giving it 4 or 5 stars. I assure you, 100%, the people who reviewed this 4 or 5 stars work for the publisher of this book. There is no way any logical, reasonable person could possibly give this book more than 2 stars. The only positive is that it has an outline for your professional responsbility course in it that might be helpful on a law school exam.
Again, the questions here are NOTHING like on the actual exam. More importantly, the Kaplan website offers free MPRE study materials that ARE like the exam. And no, I'm obviously not a Kaplan rep or I wouldn't write such a crappily written review with all these typos. Go use the Kaplan site, sign up for the free course, those questions and video lecture are enough to pass the exam without wasting 30 dollars on this nonsense. The publisher should be ashamed. I should also mention that clearly the "0 of 1" who found this review helpful is clearly the Supreme representative who likely gets paid 7 dollars an hour to respond to these types of reviews on Amazon/half.com or whatever.

didn't pass,

Everyone says the MPRE is a blow-off exam and that you can ace it without studying. I wanted to increase my chance of passing by studying, so I bought this book based on the outstanding reviews here. I followed the instructions, watched the DVD and took all 3 practice exams, which I scored very high on. All in all I spent about 10-15 hours studying using only this book. I was confident going into the exam. However, scores came in yesterday and I fell well below the needed score for my jurisdiction.
I'm not sure I'd recommend this book to someone else. A book on MPRE test-taking strategy would have been more helpful and likely prevented me from having to take the November exam.

Good, but not comprehensive,
This review is from: Supreme Bar Review MPRE Review, Revised Edition (Book & DVD) (Paperback)
I took the MPRE in November 2007. When I left the exam, I was sorry that I had relied on this book because I was not sure that I had passed the exam. A lot of the material on the test was not covered in the book. I felt worse when I talked to a fellow test taker who had used both Bar/Bri and Pieper to prepare for the exam.
I got my results yesterday and scored a 123, well above the 85 I needed to pass in my jurisdiction. Here are some of my thoughts on the book and the MPRE in general. If you have a lot of time to study, are not a good test taker, have enough money, or just don't want to take any chances, I would explore Bar/Bri or perhaps some other more comprehensive programs. I know that I would have felt more confident leaving the exam if I had gone with Bar/Bri based on my past experience with them on Bar exam prep. Since I didn't use these programs I don't know anything about them, but I would recommend looking into them. Reading the outline, watching the video, and doing the practice questions takes only about 16 hours, max. If that's all the time you have, this book may be the right choice. I also bought a copy of the model rules from the ABA, but did not find it helpful. The rules are set up in a manner that is different than the outline, and I was afraid of confusion. I thought the video was helpful. Mine worked fine (it stuck in only one place) and I found it to be a useful companion to the outline. Remember, the MPRE is scaled, with 50 being the lowest and 150 the highest score. So a 72 or 85 passing score is still below the average. You don't need to kill yourself to pass this exam. The 150 test questions in the book were helpful, but a number of them were covered in the lecture. I thought the questions in the book were much easier than those on the actual exam I took. I personally believe the best way to prepare for these type of exams is to do as many sample questions as possible. I would have like to have had more of them.

NO NEW PRACTICE QUESTIONS,
By cwestra (MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Supreme Bar Review MPRE Review, Revised Edition (Book & DVD) (Paperback)
I bought this book to help study for the MPRE in August 2009. I took PR a long time ago, so I was worried about being prepared for the test. I was told that the best way to review was to do practice questions, so I was seeking out extra sets of practice questions. On the MPRE website, they have a bunch of free questions you can download and print out, as well as a practice exam you can purchase for $20 or so. Then this book advertised even more questions, and I figured more would help. Except the practice questions in this book are THE EXACT SAME as the questions that are available online for free! So I basically paid $40 to have them print them out and bind them into a book for me with explanations. USELESS!! The explanations are not useful - along the lines of "B can't be right because A is right." I guess the outlines are a little helpful, but they're very vague and simplistic, and don't provide enough info to actually teach you anything. So, if you just took a PR class catered to the MPRE, it wouldn't help you learn anything you didn't already know. If you haven't taken such a course recently, it's not going to make much sense to you. My advice: find another book. Don't buy this one. Buy one with a better review of the material, and make sure the review questions they give you are ACTUALLY NEW!!

No pass, no good,

Failing the MPRE won't end your life or hurt your pride, but it is REALLY ANNOYING.
All you need to do with the MPRE is pass. That said, if you'd rather not study for... wake up for... and lose a Saturday for the MPRE *twice*, I highly recommend another method of review. This book does not reduce the chance of failure *quite* enough in New York (pass = 85). The DVD lecture is dull, and I didn't find the practice questions predictive of success on the MPRE. After reviewing with Supreme Bar Review the week before the November '07 MPRE, I got an 82. You MAY pass with Supreme, but the chance of NOT passing is still high enough that I don't recommend it. 2 of my friends also used Supreme: one is at the top of our class and passed by a few points, and the other failed by several points. I took the free Pieper class before the March '08 MPRE, read over the notes several times and took 2 practice exams. I passed by a landslide. |
