Don't Let The Cover Fool You... But "The Supremes" show why they are Supreme!!,
This review is from: The Supremes: Greatest Hits - Live in Amsterdam (DVD)
This cover is of the original Supremes at The Copa... which, of course, was Diana, Mary and Flo.
The DVD is of Diana, Mary and Cindy, recorded live in concert on 3/4/1968 at Gebouw Amsterdam. Don't get me wrong, although I have a special fondness for the original Supremes, this is a GREAT show. It has been digitally remastered from the original black and white recording. Diana opens the set walking down thru the audience towards the stage singing "With A Song In My Heart" while reaching out and touching audience members hands. And this was years before "Reach Out And Touch" was even written! It is a nice mixture of show tunes,a Beatles medley, and of course all of the Supremes standards. They change fabulous gowns several times, and I especiallly love the choreographed verbal interactios between Diana, Mary and Cindy. Also included is an extra live recording from Carre Amsterdam on 10/14/1964 with "the girls" singing "Baby Love", "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes",and "Let Me Go The Right Way". So do yourself a favor, and buy this DVD. You will love it. I have played mine atleast 25 times, and I never grow tired of it!

Happy that I bought it from the UK,

Being a long time fan of the SUPREMES, and, since this DVD isn't available in America and probably never will be, I thought I'd take a chance and purchase it from the UK. I do have a multi region DVD player, as well as conventional NTSC DVD players and I'm happy to report that this DVD plays well on all of my machines. A pirated version of the 68 Amsterdam Concert has been available for years, but this DVD is far SUPERIOR any copy I've seen before. Yes, the concert is in black and white, but so what? It was taped nearly 40 years ago. It could've been digitally re-mastered, but the picture and sound quality is still fantastic and it's obvious that care was taken putting this DVD together. The bonus footage of Diana, Mary and Flo, from 1964, make this worth the price. The 68 concert footage with Diana, Mary and Cindy is essentially the same concert "The Supremes Live at Talk of the Town" that was released on vinyl and CD. It's a real treat to see this footage after hearing the live album for all of these years and it shows what made the SUPREMES so visually exciting. 2004 marked the 40th anniversary of the SUPREMES 1st #1 hit. Sadly, no one noticed, except for Hip-O-Select who re-released Where Did Our Love go with many previously unreleased tracks from that session. Get this DVD before it's gone. Wake up America, we're ignoring one of our national treasures! Besides, I respectfully point out, the SUPREMES were the only real competition the Beatles ever had during that time period, chalking up 12 number one hits and consistantly knocking the Beatles off of the charts. This DVD does show them as they were and why their artistry should be respected. The industry in general, and America in particular should recognize their artistry and respect their cultural contributions. They are, after all, SUPREME!

They paved the way for all the others that have since followed.....Diana and The Supremes were elegance, style, class and commerciality....This dvd from Holland, shows them a year before they were to break up as a group.....Having never seen a full supremes concert on dvd, nor any being officially available here in the u.s.a...this makes on hell of a gem to have. I wished though ,that is was in color as most of the visual appeal is lost through the black and white filming.....but considering it's age (shot in 1968 and looks very good in quality) and again it's rarity on dvd, this is an excellent collection to have.....

When I ordered this DVD last Christmas there was NO warning about it being a Region 2 and therefore incompatible with my DVD player! This was a big disappointment because there are NO other full concert versions of The Supremes or Diana Ross and the Supremes available for purchase on DVD! Why can't this be remastered and released on a normal DVD that fans can purchase and enjoy? There were several concerts of the Supremes that were filmed - including their 2 television specials with the Temptations - "TCB" and "On Broadway" - both in color - that could be released as a boxed set. Motown/MCA should be ashamed of themselves for sitting on a gold mine and depriving fans of seeing Diana Ross and the Supremes live in concert!

The Supremes' Magic Captured Live,
By
This review is from: The Supremes: Greatest Hits - Live in Amsterdam (DVD)
We re-watched this DVD last night that I'd purchased in 2007, and I decided to look up what reviews there were. I agree it's great to have it and to see captured the essence of the magic that made The Supremes (not nickpicking here on which incarnation -- simply referring to the group as an entity overall) unique, excellent, prepared and original in what they did and how they presented it.
I've read that pop music history has more recently downplayed the significance of The Supremes' success and place in the medium. I disagree. I was watching this vid and, again, I realized I was viewing three performers still in just their twenties, and realizing that which they made look so effortless, poised, sophisticated, energetic, mature and flawless meant there was that much more proportionate hard work and rehearsing put into it. Here, Cindy, Mary and Diana perform professionally far beyond what their then-ages would normally have hinted at...think about all their musical genre peers in the late 1960s, in and out of soul music, at that time.. I was struck how when The Supremes at their height of success were live on TV or in concert, theirs wasn't a girl group presenting a performance: rather, they were a musical act sort of performing like a Broadway show presentation, complete with segue lines, gestures, choreography, costuming, arrangements, and personas all planned and set. Maybe we need more of that in today's all-too-impromptu (and sometimes undertalented or unprepared) young musical artists. Me, too -- I wish this had been in color -- but that's OK, it lets today's music fans see what made The Supremes in concert SPECIAL. Every part of their group, performance, and image intertwined and was equally important in making the act successful and unique overall. Cindy's visual warmness, Mary's beauty and personality, and Diana's talented leading vocals and charisma just blended so well. They came onstage and were real acting pros: if we only knew, later on, how much that onstage acting ability came into play based on the turmoil that went on in the group back- and off-stage.. ;) As one previous reviewer petitioned, I agree that hopefully -- now, in this "Motown 50" year -- we'll see the suits presently overseeing the Motown label's assets releasing, finally and mercifully for us fans, some boxed set that can present the restored and complete other Supremes specials in which they co-starred such as Anatomy of Pop, TCB and GIT. Motown worked hard for and earned The Supremes, and in turn they did the same with their success. We fans, who underlined all this happening for them, ultimately most deserve a positive response to this request of ours! The special played well enough on my Vivo-brand DVD, and I agree that the bonus Flo/Supremes '64 footage was fun. (Now I know where maybe Diana got the idea for the Boeing 747-distance stageing between her and Lynda and Scherrie for RTL 2000 -- you could've fit a couple of sets of Marvelettes or Velvelettes between Ross and Wilson & Ballard in that '64 stage performance. :-)

I had the pleasure of seeing Diana, Mary, and Cindy perform at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago during their last concert tour together in the fall of 1969. Seeing this fantastic DVD brings back the thrill of that evening. The show they perform here is basically the same one as the one on The Talk of The Town album - and it is wonderful to actually SEE the gals perform it live. (The concert that I saw in 1969 had a different run-down in songs - more like the Farewell album). This DVD did not play on any of my US DVD players - but luckily I have a multi-Region player - and it plays fine on it. As others have mentioned, it is in black and white - but the quality is very good - and it is a rare gem. I highly recommend it!

Finally got a chance to see this after finally finding an All Regions DVD Player that could actually play it. As already mentioned, this is a Region 2 dvd that won't play on standard American dvd players. I tried to play in my regular dvd player, but it wouldn't play it.
I will say right-off-the-top that it was great to finally see a real Supremes concert. They were making music before I was actually born, so it's great to at least look back on what I unfortunately missed. This isn't the original Supremes, as already mentioned in other reviews. This concert was in Gebouw, Amsterdam on 4-3-1968. It's suprising short at just over 49 minutes long. Well songs were much shorter in length back then. No musical breaks, and unfortunately, not much real spontaneous action either. It's all nicely structured though, and the women do keep it light and fun at times. Diana, Mary, and Cindy Birdsong do a wonderful job and sound great doing it. The all look great and are quite attractive too. Love the beautiful outfits/dresses they wear. Was suprised at how many showtunes there were, and personally would have liked hearing more Supremes songs. They certainly had enough hits by then. They all apparently loved showtunes too though, and I can't knock them for singing what they love. Playlist includes: 1. With A Song In My Heart. 2. Stranger In Paradise. 3. Wonderfull Wonderfull. 4. All My Love. 5. Supremes Medley: Stop In The Name Of Love. Come See About Me. My World Is Empty Without You. Baby Love. 6. Queen Of The House. 7. Love Is Here And Now Your Gone. 8. More. 9. The Happening 10. Michelle/Yesterday 11. The Lady Is A Tramp 12. In And Out Of Love 13. Medley: Throughly Modern Millie Second Hand Rose Mame 14. Reflections 15. Somewhere (From 'West Side Story) 16. You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You.

THIS PROGRAM WAS RECORDED IN 1968 AFTER FLO LEFT THE GROUP SO WHY WOULD THEY PLACE AN EARLIER PHOTOGRAPH ON THE COVER./the show is in black and white but still very dramatic and much better than the reflections Dvd.it would have been great if there had been footage from backstage, maybe there is somewhere. this is a must have dvd.

Excellent Concert. Eventhough it is filmed in black & white, not color. Also it is Diana Ross & the Supremes, not The Supremes. False advertising thru the person selling but even excellent in black & white. Shame not in color. Not the greatest hits, but once again a excellent concert!!!.I reccommend it to any supremes fan. 99% word for word as the CD, Diana Ross & The Supremes "Live At London's Talk Of The Town". Purchase it and enjoy!!
