4.0 out of 5 stars 4.25 stars - Dres: The Multifaceted One, February 19, 2002

This review is from: Sure Shot Redemtion (Audio CD)
Some have charged this album as being effete, and an overall skirmishing disappointment. Despite the inapt title, Dres has provided fans with an album that is more than satisfying, without being a comeback of sorts. I know, its hard to get over the fact that he pulled a 360 by swapping coasts and style of production. His flow, however,is still intact, and though Lawgne is missed, Dres compensates for this by way of tracks that he himself helms, with additional input from a crew called The Molecules. Guests are limited and off kilter, but come through nonetheless, at times extraorinarily so, with the exception of a lone, foul-mouthed, juvenile con (Mr. "I'll kill you over some cds and petty cash" former native tonguer Chi-Ali). Indeed, Vicki Miles and Horace Brown provide smooth, jazzy falsettos on "Night Time" and "You're so Vain", two back-to-back tracks that represent the apex of this album, and really serve to galvanize it. If you are a fan of Dres' stream-of-consciousness; conversational flow of yesteryear, then tracks like "I remember" and "Hi and Lo" will have you reminsicing. This is his strongest ability as an artist, although as previously mentioned, he really needs to serve others in hiphop and jazz with his all-out groovy stylings. Ignore the naysayers, and at least give "Sure Shot Redemption" a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre Mix, April 28, 2002
This review is from: Sure Shot Redemtion (Audio CD)
There's a strange mix of old style (jazzy beats, sense of humor) and a more contemporary style (repetitive r and b tinged thug beats with thug lyrics) that has me programming half this album out. How the final two tracks, one an ode to gettin' benjamins and the other an uplifting ode to black culture, ended up on the same album is a mystery.
Despite the inconsistency, I rate this 4 stars because it's Dres, the finest flowing lyricist ever, an MC who puts thought and heart into what he's saying. Dump the thug tracks and this record feels like a rainy night drive through a deserted downtown, with ambulance lights coming around the corner.
