5.0 out of 5 stars No need to pray
The Saint, like all of Surefire's products is built to a standard of near-bobmproof. The ability to use both C123 and AA batteries for power is a great incentive to buy this product.
I really like this device.

I review many products as the editor of an alternative news website. This Surefire light is robustly constructed but suffers from two nagging problems:

#1) The LED lens refracts light in a small sliver to one side, causing a glint of light in the periphery of your vision. This is an annoying light artifact that shows a lack of quality control in the LED lens.

#2) One-handed adjustment of the light intensity is not possible (as is claimed on the box) because rotating the dimmer switch also causes the entire LED housing cylinder to rotate, often rotating the LED right into your eyes. Adjusting this unit takes two hands, not one. This precludes its usefulness for many tasks, from spelunking and night climbing to nighttime shooting.

Aside from those two issues, the unit is extremely well constructed and seems virtually indestructable. Quality shows throughout. At the relatively high price being asked for this item, it should not suffer from low-quality lens artifacts or dimmer control issues.

I plan to return my unit for replacement and hope the problems experienced here are not present throughout the entire manufacturing run of the product.

Originally I bought this headlamp to use while doing night photography. The SureFire Saint is basically the same as the SureFire Minimus expect it comes with a battery pack and extra head strap. This is a great headlamp to take along camping. But if you just need to go hands free stick with the Minimus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy but needs to be tweeked., April 15, 2011
This review is from: Surefire Saint LED Headlamp (Sports)
Surefire did a good job with this. The adjustable beam is variable in brightness. The ability to use a battery pack or single battery makes it very versatile. It's well built, as is expected from Surefire and incredibly bright. The headgear is comfortable and secure. Many of the Petzl models have a built in red filter. Surefire could easily add one to this model and make it a 5 Star. Surefire prices are going up enough that I am starting to look at competitive models more and more, but for now they are making the grade.

As the rest of there products this one is certainly heavy duty. Love the range for the battery life. My only down fall is I wish I could have the option to zero in on an object, like a raccoon in a tree for instance. Led Lenser really did it just wish they could hold up to tree smacking, falling in the dirt, dropping in the water type of abuse that you know a sure fire can handle.

The first of these I ordered was based on previous reviews and one item I had seen. The one I received came in an opened package and was glowing brightly when I opened it. I quickly found out that the unit would not turn off at all and that the variable intensity was shaky at best. Still, I did admire the construction. I got little satisfaction from the first vendor, since they only give money back if you return it in 7 days and I was about to travel for the next week. I contacted SureFire and they quickly sent an RMA for repair of the unit after I returned from my trip. It took a few weeks, and it appears they just sent a new one, but they made good on the purchase. I ordered another one in the meantime and this one has even better construction than the first. The second unit has a better single battery setup and a knurled aluminum knob, which makes operation somewhat easier. Overall the experience of obtaining the light was a bit frustrating, but the unit itself is well built and works well, as stated in other ratings. To be totally fair, the 3 stars is due to the buying experience and time it took to get a good unit.
