As a military member, I've eaten MRE's since 1984.

Over the past few months I have become interested in disaster preparedness, especially since the blizzard of 09. As a result I went online and ordered a number of half cases of MREs to try with my family in the interest of determining which brands that I should purchase.

To do this I had all three members of my family taste each entrée and rate it on a four point scale: Check plus - very good, Check -acceptable to good, Check minus - I'd eat it, and X - I'd rather starve.

I also had everyone rate the general quality of the MRE on the same scale. This includes the raw amount of food, the overall quality of the side dishes (if any) and the sides, and the overall taste of the sides and snacks.

After eating MREs for the entire New Year's three day weekend these Sopacs tied for first place with the A-Packs. (There was one MRE that did better then both of these, but they are almost impossible to find and are expensive because shipping is not included in the price per case. Since these were originally made for a certain security company that used to be named after dark "water" and were sold after they scaled back their operations in Iraq you can understand their scarcity.)

The quality of the Sopacs is excellent. There is plenty of food. Every Sopac MRE comes with a moist side dish like a military MRE. This is a slight plus over the A-packs because it helps to give greater variety to the meals. Besides, if you are in a survival situation you want to be reminded of the "good ole days" through the foods that you eat. I imagine most people have corn, rice, and the like as side dishes most nights... and that's exactly what you get in each Sopac. However no-one in my family was really thrilled with the "Mexican corn" or the "fried rice" sides.

I ordered this product based off price. Compared to other sellers, this SurePak was a deal. However, being in the military and eating my fair share MREs, all of the individual MREs have been "Rat-F***ED." Simply meaning, there are food items missing out of each one. SUCH AS; The Pork Rib Boneless should come with bread, a candy, and tobasco sauce. All the MREs have the same thing in them minus the main meal and secondary, other than that its Crackers, Strawberry Jam and a Fig bar...thats it, oh and a fruit punch. All in all it will keep you from starving, but its no where near a real MRE, might as well just pay the extra money and get the good stuff. I will not be ordering these again, I'll just trade with supply guys on base and save the money.

As a military member, I've eaten MRE's since 1984. I've had good ones, OK ones, and even some not so tasteful ones. I was excited to order a pack of 12 for emergencies. I was highly disappointed in the quality of the main course, as well as those extras in the packs. EVERY MRE had the same side - refried beans. EVERY MRE had 2 rye crackers (cardboard but less flavor). EVERY MRE also had decaf coffee pack and a pack of grape jelly (I guess for the rye cracker??!!). Will give as gag gifts - will not eat. Moral of the story - stick with military issue MRE's.

These MRE's tasted better than I thought they would! They are very easy to heat up and convenient to take on camping/hiking trips. I will be purchasing some more in the near future.

I was planning to use this for our emergency food supply for the summertime Hurricane season. We first wanted to find what tasted ok, at least and could be kept for a long time. Each packs of food are sealed in plastic bag. The meats tasted okay. Very fattening but okay. But the side were all the same and refried beans with a spicy kick. I can understand if this was for a mexican main dish...BUT NOT ALL OF THEM....really disappointed with the sides. Each pack also comes with something they call coffee, sugar, cream, napkin, and a orange powdered drink that is added to water.Oh and pack of crackers and grape jelly. Desert is a very large Oatmeal Cookie, only...in each pack. I guess this would work if you're not picky like I am. I'm sticking with box and canned foods.
