Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this rare 1963 album. In the late '90s, Bacchus Archives was put in touch with surf legend Norman Knowles, member of The Revels and writer of the surf classic 'Church Key' as Norman produced the classic but totally obscure LP that was originally released on the budget Sutton label in 1963, with no liner notes, no inner sleeve, and no distribution beyond the dollar rack at local grocery stores! It was rumored that there were some unreleased tracks and as it turned out, Norman had them! The tracks were taken from the best sources possible with many in stereo. The Surf Teens were from the central coast town of Atascadero, California and at the time consisted of Jeff Hammond, 16 years old, lead guitar, John Hammon, 13 years old, drums, Greg Smith, 16, rhythm guitar, Tony Johnson, 20, bass - their ages at the time of recording SURF MANIA prove indeed that they were surf teens!

Why has noone reviewed this?! This is one of the best surf records ever! Damn, people! This is the real, raw stuff. Recorded by actual teenagers in 1963, and originally released on an obscure budget label. The drummer was only 13! Great, great energetic stuff. A must for any true surf nut!

This is one boss record! I actually do not have the CD, but I just found a copy of the LP that this all came from in a Spartanburg, South Carolina thrift store. I never heard of "The Surf Teens", and I was doing some digging on the internet to find out when this was recorded, and boom I find this CD. The CD has tracks that were not on the budget LP, so if you are one of the three people still alive who bought this record at your local A&P grocery store, the CD is a good walk down memory lane.

My copy of the record was on the Sutton label, and I cannot find anything about them. I can tell you that the LP was a poor pressing, but the sound is UNBELIEVABLE. First, it is in true stereo, which was a shocker. The sound is full-fidelity. The SURF TEENS sound like a Dick Dale or early Ventures jam session! It is a pleasure to hear a well played, undistorted guitar. The material is less than stellar, but the good-time feeling makes up for that! If you are a fan of surf music, you shoud get this record.
