Sparkle and Shimmer,

This review is from: The Surface and the Shine (Audio CD)
A title like _The Surface and the Shine_ suggests high polish, and this record sure delivers that. The style varies from punk to bluesy rock-and-roll to midtempo pop, but every song offers sharp band performances, terrific vocal harmonies, and a clear mix that shows off a superb arrangement. Guitarist/bassist Shalini and multi-instrumentalist Mitch Easter have perfected their musical partnership: this album consistently rings with an authority not always present on _We Want Jelly Donuts_ and _Metal Corner_, good as they are. Especially noteworthy here is Shalini's singing, which ranges from her familiar ethereal soprano to a newly rich and commanding alto. With contributions by drummer Eric Marshall, backup vocalist Jane Francis, and bassist Paul Chastain, _The Surface and the Shine_ is definitely Shalini's best record yet.

I have a really hard time describing how a band sounds. I think it's easire to make comparisons. I'll just say that if you like bands like the Darling Buds, Fonda, Echobelly, Throwing Muses, Pandoras, GoGo's, you're probably going to like Shalini.
