Reaching Below and Above the Surface, March 16, 2009
This review is from: The Surface of Things (Paperback)
The Surface of Things, Davidson's collection, is so much more than that. It's an exploration of the tightness of form, how it forces constraint while somehow freeing the mind and heart and soul to explore the depth of layers within and beneath. It's deceptive simplicity and ease takes the reader on a gliding journey through life and death, nostalgia and longing. "How to explain such compressed desire?" Davidson does it her gift of language, her deft use of image and music, the blend of symbol and reality. These poems will not let you rest. They burrow inside your own surface, implant each small wisdom, each undeniable truth until the poet leaves the reader haunted and questioning, yet never more sure that answers will be given if we simply plunge ourselves below the surface. "So many things we try not to see. And that means more than you'd think." Phebe Davidson lays a surface and invites you to walk with her to discover your own grounding.
