In the half-century since he began his reign as King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale has remained one of rock's most innovative and influential axemen. A bold pioneer in the use of speed, volume and sonic texture, the charismatic Dale invented surf music, and in the process permanently altered the role of the electric guitar in rock 'n' roll. Of all the surf guitarists who would follow in Dale's wake, none could match his prodigious technique, his fierce showmanship or his restless inventiveness.

At the dawn of the 1960s, Dale's passion for the sport of surfing inspired him to create music that replicated the physical sensations of the surfing experience.

Although he began releasing singles on his own Deltone label in the late '50s, Dale made much of his most enduring music during his '60s stint with Capitol Records. In addition to carving out the surf sound on the landmark albums Surfers' Choice, King of the Surf Guitar and Summer Surf, Dale turned for inspiration to another all-American pursuit--drag racing--to create the hot-rod music genre on the LPs Checkered Flag and Mr. Eliminator. Now, Sundazed is making Dick Dale's reverb-soaked, genius LPs available once again, the way they were meant to be heard: on vinyl. Our vinyl restoration of the vintage Dale catalog features Surfers' Choice, Dale's scorching 1962 debut LP, spotlighting surf classics "Let's Go Trippin'," "Peppermint Man" and "Surf Beat." It's great the guys at Sundazed finally got the lead out and rereleased these old Dick dale albums. Up until recently, the only way you were gonna get your mitts on them is if you bought the vinyl. Any old Dale tracks on cd could only be heard on "Best of" compilations. Not No Mo!!! Surfer's Choice was the first of the bunch that Sundazed released, and Dale's first album. Excellent stuff. It's easy to see why this singlehandedly started a craze back in 61. It's very energetic, catchy, hell even the vocal tunes are good, and I'm not a big surf vocal guy. A word of warning though to those surf instrumental fans, there are quite a few vocal tunes here. I would prefer a few less with a few more instrumentals. Definitely worth checking out if you want a prime example of the original California surf sound. Plus, you can finally have that version of Miserlou as used in Pulp Fiction without having to suffer through Urge Overkill!!

The Miserlou Twist is worth the price of admission. Best rendition of that instrumental standard I've ever heard!

Some of the recordings sound rather raw, but the energy is there. Surf music simply doesn't get any better than this.

Indeed, it sounds as if the contents of the original LP are from the original master tapes, and these songs sound great. I'm not sure about the source for the "bonus tracks". I have a hard time believing that Miserlou is from the original tapes...any other opinions???
