5.0 out of 5 stars REMASTER 2012 GOTTA HAVE IT BUT...!!!! October 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
So, what I've always wanted was a clean digitally remastered version of "LONELY SEA" in MONO! The stereo is rechanneled with Brian singing on one channel and the guys singing on the other! The mono eliminates that. "Farmer's Daughter" is another must have in Mono. However, the Stereo "SHUT DOWN" is actually rechanneled on this CD. To get it in TRUE STEREO, you must purchase the "SURFIN' USA EP (on ITUNES....NOW THAT is TRUE STEREO SOUND!!!

One other thing, there is a minor remastering error on the Mono version of "Stoked" with a missing "S" that is never heard on the beginning of the song. I had to pull out my original mono album to make sure that the "S" is there...and it is! So, it is indeed an engineering error. However, the wonderful super clean Stereo version is just superb and complete.

Now, don't look for a "Deluxe Issue" here. While the music and vocals are very clean on this CD, the gatefold packaging is a bit weak without any details on the songs but still an overwhelming experience for anyone who enjoys surf music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sonic improvement over the prior CDs of Surfin' USA! October 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
What more can I say? The stereo parts sound great, and the mono parts sound even better -- glad to finally have these on CD!

Why is my review 4 out of 5 instead of 5 out of 5? Because there's at least one mastering error, in that the mono "Stoked" is missing about a split-second off the beginning, resulting in Mike Love saying "tooooooooked" instead of "stooooooooooked". I know, a minor quibble, but it's enough to be distracting...

Also, and this might seem nitpicky, but...why on EARTH has Capitol insisted for the past 22 years on using the album cover from the '80s budget re-issue instead of the ORIGINAL cover?? As a result, the front cover doesn't list "Stoked" and "Surf Jam," although those tunes are present. Clean copies of the original cover are NOT hard to find, and even if they're not perfect, Capitol's art department certainly has access to Photoshop or something and can fix any blemishes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beach Boys' second album - good, but not great November 3, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
SURFIN' USA was The Beach Boys' second Capitol album, and was their first to go Top Ten. It contains the hits "Surfin' USA" (based on Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen"), and "Shut Down," along with five surfing instrumentals, and other tracks such as "Lonely Sea," originally recorded on their 1962 demo. It was first released on CD as a Mobile Fidelity "two-fer" (Surfer Girl & Surfin USA) in 1989, and then was issued by Capitol as a "two-fer" (with Surfin' Safari) in 1990. The "two-fers" were broken up into separate CDs in the mid-'90s, but then resurfaced in 1997 as Canadian imports, and then were remastered and reissued in the USA in 2001.

The 2012 version of SURFIN' USA has both the mono (making its CD debut) and the stereo versions of the album. Both are nice to have, but if all you care about is the stereo version, stick with the Surfin' Safari / Surfin' USA "two-fer" mentioned above, which has bonus tracks. It's not The Boys' best work, but they would get a lot better next time.

NOTE: Like other reviewers, I also noticed that the front cover art, like the "two-fer," has the ten-song track listing from the budget-line reissue, instead of the full twelve-song version. Doesn't Capitol have the original cover in their vaults somewhere?
