About the Author
Rod Sumpter has won multiple national and international surfing championships, placed top ten in the World Surfing Championships, acted as president of the English Surfing Federation, held a starring role in the U.S. surfing film The Endless Summer, and captured more surfing titles in his thirty years of worldwide competition than most surfers in the world alive today. These days, Rod spends much of his time revisiting and documenting many of his favorite surf spots around the world, many of which are in Hawaii. He is also the author of 100 Best Surf Spots in the World (Globe Pequot).

It Does the Job, but Could Use More,

I used the Surfing California book in this series in the past, and thought that was a better book not only because it provided more in-depth reviews and details of specific surf locations, but also because it skipped the body-boarding locations, which I had no use for. Surfing Hawaii will be useful for the person who doesn't know Hawaii well, but I wish it would give detailed information on ALL the locations, not just the ones it deems more popular. Granted it lists pretty much all the locations, but for a lot of them it only gives a one-paragraph description, while for other locations there can be pages of info. All-in-all, the book could use more, but it does the job and is probably the best of all the surf travel books.

There might be better guide books out there but this book does a decent job pointing out the various spots around the different Hawaiian islands. My recent trip was to Oahu and lion's share of this book is devoted to that island. Maui also gets a lot of coverage. This is probably typical of most of the guide books covering Hawaii. My one major complaint is the lack of in-depth reviews and details of many of the listed surf spots. Only a few breaks get covered in any type of depth. Nonetheless this book served as a good starting place and reference during my trip. My opinion on surf guide books in general is they are jumping off points. My advice with this book is to use it as a reference but definitely talk to the locals, be respective, and you'll probably score some epic waves. I know I did.

I wanted a book to use as I was planning a trip to Hawaii for my son and I and wanted to know the best surf spots. This book covers locations, seasonal conditions, and rates them. I was pleased with the book.
