Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

As the title suggests, Surfing the Internet with Netscape Communicator 4 is one third Communicator overview, one third Web guide, and one third general setup and connection advice. This is a quick and easy read if you are new to the Web and want to use Netscape Communicator as your platform. The first chapters discuss the different features of the software package, including how to configure and customize the browser, use bookmarks, send and manage e-mail, participate in discussion groups, and utilize Conference for chatting and collaborative browsing. The book organizes the information in short numbered steps to get you up and running quickly.

The next section of the text is devoted to the Web and the types of documents and files you will find there. Section topics include live content such as Java and ActiveX, VRML, and Web page design. New users will especially appreciate the chapter on search tools, which contains both general information as well as specific advice on many of the available Search pages, including Yahoo!, HotBot, AltaVista, and Excite.

The final portion of the book is designed to get you connected and surfing as quickly and efficiently as possible. These chapters contain information on installing Communicator, configuring Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking, and using Communicator in conjunction with online services like America Online, CompuServe, and the Microsoft Network. The included CD-ROM contains HTML pages with hyperlinks to browse, AOL start-up software, NETCOM's starter package, Marimba's Castanet, a demo of Bongo, JetEffects (a Java authoring tool), and other utilities. While none of the sections could be called exhaustive, Surfing the Internet with Netscape Communicator 4 is a good all-in-one starter guide. The guide is for Windows and Windows 95 only.

2.0 out of 5 stars You cannot learn how to 'push' with this one, October 17, 1997
This review is from: Surfing the Internet With Netscape Communicator 4 (Paperback)
If you are an average computer-novice-but-having-been-surfing-the-internet-anyway like myself, I reckon you already know what you find in this book along the way. The basic functions are same from previous browser products. You'd rather want to know more. The only reason I can think of why you consider buying this book is you want to learn how to 'push' the contents from the www. You can't with this book. It has a few comments and a few pages about how the Marimba's Castanet software but not the Communicator is supposed to do the job(the software is included in the CD-ROM that accompanies this book), but there were no specific procedures in this book. It is read like you can just follow the program's instructions but it didn't work with me. Worse, because this software interfered with Communicator and I couldn't browse with the software in the backgrowd. All of this reminded me of how I had to choose IE 3.0 because I couldn't find an appropriate textbook or an authoritative source from Netscape. If you are familiar with the scenario approach of Microsoft, you would probably find little practical value of this book. This book covers probably most basic things about this browser in fragmental descriptions but you can figure them out if you have used other browsers before. And even if you are a complete beginner, you will have to buy another book to learn the much-advertised 'push' functions about this browser. Frankly, I regret I bought this book. I think you should think twice before buying this one. Look around carefully. It might save your time and money.
