I used this book to learn how to surf, and I am now a very good surfer. If you want a how-to book on how to surf, this is the one you need. It is a slim volume, with a home-made look to it, but its slimness is why you can learn to surf FAST, since all the information is efficiently told.

It might be of interest that the author of this surf guide also helps design large architectural projects for the firm WATG, and surfers in particular might be interested that a large resort Mr. Furnas helped design is presently being built at a great surf spot in China known as Shimei Bay, on Hainan Island (known as China's Hawaii). Shimei Bay has three miles of surfable beachfront. Mr. Furnas writes up design ideas as a writer (in the form of "literary blueprints") and architects then take what he's written to use in a project's design. The Shimei Bay resort for which Mr. Furnas wrote a "literary blueprint" will cover 2,800 acres (some of it has been built and is already open, but the whole thing will take years to complete; sort of like Disneyland). The literary blueprint that will give the Shimei Bay resort its theme consists of a storyline of both fact and fiction, and the resort's hotels, amusement rides, etc., will be designed around the storyline's real and fictional characters (including pirates and Marco Polo) and their adventures. (For example, the storyline includes an adventure featuring whales, so the architects have designed harbor buildings to look like abstract whales.) So it's appropriate that the author of a surfing guide has helped design a resort that will sit right at a great surf spot.
