5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Side Project for Devendra, December 2, 2008

I couldn't find this album in any music store where I lived. I looked every where and it was killing me because I consider myself a big Devendra Banhart fan. When I finally got it I was very impressed by the album. If you like DB than this is right up your ally. It's just like a DB album with some special guest. It has its mellow moments and its peppy moments but the one constant is that its meant to be funny. You won't be rolling on the ground laughing but its clever. I agree with the other reviewer, don't take this album seriously. Its meant to be shocking but its done in pardoy. Bottom Line: If you're a Devendra Banhart fan, you'll love this album.

It will one day be acknowledged that this is a recording of personal, political & spiritual genius and a masterpiece of Beatles-like proportions. Deep frolicking & reverent irreverence throughout. A big gay romp through the annals of eternity.

The Megapuss project is Devendra Banhart & Greg Rogove at their mercurial best. I can listen to it over and over within a day, for weeks on end, and months on end... Like any classic recording, from Van Norrison's 'Astral Weeks' to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" the gallop of "SURFING" is ALWAYS welcome on the stereo.

"What's better than surfing?" said Rogove of the album title. "Not even the literal meaning ... but the action of surfing, conceptually. The gracefulness amongst the great powers of nature and the universe - and you're just cruising along with it. That's the inspiration" & it is the most inspiring recording I've heard in a long long time.

Ah, what an entertaining album. This is a parody album-- sly humor, not laugh out loud humor-- the vinyl equivalent of a naughty dork joke. More rock-n-roll than the eccentric folk music Devendra and gang are know for, with riffs borrowed from other classic tunes, but in a fun and reverential way. There are a few serious (and seriously good) tunes thrown in and I have to say that all the songs are listenable. Nothing you will want to skip over, though "Duck People" borders on skip-this-track for me personally, even though it makes me chuckle. I find myself wishing that they had expanded "Adam and Steve" to a full length track, as it is a catchy tune, but alas it ends just as you get to tapping your toes. Surfing is dreamy and psychedelic. Sayulita is sweetly sad and beautiful. Mr. Meat a yeasty joke track about a certain male appendage (which also should have been expanded upon). The most groan-worthy track is the fifties flavored "Chicken Tits". I'm sure alot of people will hate this album, or just won't "Get It", but I have to say it is one of my favorite records. Art is meant to entertain, and it entertains. Megapuss wants to offend, but only in a "pull-my-finger" kind of way, not sadistically.

The LP itself is packaged nicely, with an inner booklet full of neat, underground flavored artwork and some black and white photography... some nude that show everything but, and one band member wearing rather anatomical-looking groucho marx style glasses. But that's Megapuss. Why be a prude? Let's point and laugh. The vinyl album sounds nice and clear but not as "real" as some of my other analog recordings, just CD quality in my opinion. The packaging, however, is definitely worth forking out the cash for.

5.0 out of 5 stars megalove for megapuss, November 19, 2008

this is a wonderfully eccentric ride of an album, enter it with an open mind. the titles can be a little off putting if you don't use your sense of humor, actually, use your sense of humor for it in its entirety. this group is wonderful, and though some of the language or their actions may be for shock value, its done in parody.
