I bought this book only because surgery, reputed to be the most difficult rotation, was also my first, and I was terrified. Unfortunately, the book will be much more useful to you if you already know how the hospital works. Excellent advice such as, "Strive to function as the intern for every patient you are following," was completely useless for me, because at the time I had no idea what the duties of an intern were or how to do them -- and indeed, no idea what it meant to "follow" a patient.

With that said, there is still some useful advice here. But most of the highest-yield advice you can also find at the beginning of Surgical Recall and even in the last chapter of Lawrence.

This writer/Dr. knows what he is talking about. I recommend this book to all medical students that are taking their surgical clerkship. I suggest reading it the weekend before the rotation. I took me only 4 hours to read it (this time included numerous distractions)--it is concise and to the point. It contains templates of orders or progress notes to write. It tells you what to do and what not to do. I used the templates to make my own study guide to keep in my pocket. Trust me you will shine if you read this book beforehand! & the rotation will go a lot easier.
