5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!!!, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Surgery A Competency-Based Companion: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 1e (Paperback)
This book is amazing. It teaches you how to think like a surgeon, what differentials should be going through your head with various patient presentations, and outlines the methodical thought process of physicians when presented with various problems. It also includes cost-considerations of various tests, the pathophysiology behind diseases, and a guide of various basic operations you will see in General Surgery (located near the end). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Surgery reference, January 17, 2010
This review is from: Surgery A Competency-Based Companion: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 1e (Paperback)
I am a third year medical student and I used this book throughout my rotation. This book was the best single reference for the wards. It is the most comprehensive pocket-sized book I found. There are days on surgery that you will not know what you are going to scrub on or which patients you will take care of, and this book saved me a couple of times from going to the OR or the floor without at least the basics of the procedure, the complications and the management. It generally covered the things that I would get asked by my attending and resident in those situations. This book also references sabiston, so you know where to go for more reading. In surgery clerkship time is so valuable and this book really can help you manage your time and enrich your experience.

This review is from: Surgery A Competency-Based Companion: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 1e (Paperback)
This book is exceptional . Very well written and organized.
You can learn about surgical problems by going through the very well thought cases.
focuses on the six core competencies.
I loved the case-based format. It encourages active learning and helps by applying theoretical constructs to surgical practice.
If you know what is inside this book by the end of the clerkship you are by far from the top students.
there is no doubt that this book is a must have in general surgery clerkship.
I loved the ;text, teaching visuals, professors pearls.
II have it in my pocket all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Medical Student Resource!, December 3, 2008
This review is from: Surgery A Competency-Based Companion: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 1e (Paperback)
Surgery; a Competency Based Companion is a valuable learning tool for all medical students. This text, unlike other surgery study guides, is organized in a chief complaint-based manner. Students are able to look up a specific chief complaint and learn different diagnoses to consider during their evaluation of a patient. Surgery; a Competency Based Companion goes a step further with a helpful color-coding system that assists students in separating the "zebras" from the "horses," and in prioritizing each differential diagnosis. For every diagnosis included, the book gives an informative synopsis that provides an excellent review of the subject at hand. Each section is succinct yet in depth enough to afford students a complete picture about a patient they might actually be seeing or admitting, and includes tips on how to speak intelligently with colleagues regarding each chief complaint. I also appreciate that the text is extremely patient centered. For example, under the section discussing bariatric surgeries, the text spells out for the student how to explain certain procedures to their patients. It goes so far as to outline figures that will not only help the patient understand their diagnosis and anticipated procedure, but also enhance the medical student's understanding. Different sections of the text have information about professionalism and interpersonal and communication skills relating to certain patient presentations. I also appreciate the last section of the book entitled "Operations." In this section, there are descriptions of different surgery procedures in a quick glance manner. These descriptions are extremely helpful to students prior to entering the operating room as they help to point out the steps of the procedure and even go so far as to discuss indications and potential complications. Surgery; a Competency Based Companion is one of the most useful texts that I have discovered in my medical school career. I strongly encourage all medical students to consider using this study guide for any surgical experiences.
