Book Description

This one-of-a-kind resource brings together all three 'gastrointestinal' organ systems into one textbook of surgical and medical disorders of the GI tract, liver, billiary tract and pancreas. With a strong foundation in morphology, it offers a comprehensive and practical guide to the interpretation of endoscopic biopsies and resection specimens of the alimentary tract and related solid organs. In addition, chapters outline the current clinical approach to management and treatment options, wherever applicable, particularly regarding screening and surveillance recommendations for preneoplastic disorders. You will also find that diseases integrate key pathologic findings with relevant cytologic and genetic information necessary in order to establish an accurate diagnosis.
  • Emphasizes key histologic features necessary to assist in the identification of diseases based upon evaluation of biopsy and resection specimens.
  • Information reflects new understanding of the molecular/phenotypic origin of many disorders.
  • Integrates complementary diagnostic methods such as immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and cytology with pathologic features.
  • Discusses the up-to-date and controversial aspects of the "hottest" topics in the field.
  • Includes separate chapters on diagnostic cytology of the GI tract, liver, billiary tract and pancreas.
  • Features the expertise of three renowned specialists and more than 50 distinguished contributors.
  • Covers the differential diagnosis of most disorders in an algorithmic manner with abundant high quality color photographs.
  • Organizes disease categories and chapters in a user-friendly manner in order to facilitate quick access to diagnostic features on specific disease entities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Professor Odze has produced not only an up to date book, but one with an impressive array of colour plates and very readable text. I believe it is going to be a very popular reference book for those reporting gut pathology. I would recommend it for those trainees coming up to part II MRCPath who want an almost exhaustive list of conditions in the gastrintestinal tract and liver, with plenty of pictures to prompt their memory." ACP News - Spring 2004

"There are many things I like about this text. I found the writing to be succinct and lucid and treatment of subjects to be balanced. The editors have created a thorough and comprehensive book, written in a readable style and generously illustrated with many excellent color photographs, charts and tables" -Gastroenterology

"This book deserves the attention of the entire pathology and gastroenterology community at large. Without hestitation I would like to greet it as one of the most impressive new pathology books brought to my attention this year. An absolute must for your sign-out room and departmental library" -Modern Pathology

2.0 out of 5 stars poorly organized with small photographs, April 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Surgical Pathology of the GI Tract, Liver, Biliary Tract, and Pancreas (Hardcover)
I would personally not recommend this textbook for the following reasons: The chapters are organized in a confusing way with chapters organized not based on organ but on disease type. Certain chapters are certainly better than others with the liver, pancreas and extrabiliary tract being particulary better than those covering the small and large intestine. The photographs are in certain cases adequate and in others are too small and hard to interpret. Overall, I would not buy this book given the high price but may consider using it as an ancillary text

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written masterpiece, July 15, 2006
This review is from: Surgical Pathology of the GI Tract, Liver, Biliary Tract, and Pancreas (Hardcover)
This all-in-one textbook of GI pathology is one of the best textbook in the field. There is very few (if not none) textbooks combining GI, pancreas and liver into one volumne. The authors, however, presented with a comprehensive review on the surgical pathology of the three organs and the informations are quite updated. The review on GERD, IBD, neuroendocrine tumors are some of the well-written summary on the current status of the diseases.

This should be useful book for revision by those who are going to sit for exit examinations. It is also useful for practising pathologist in their daily work.
