3.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not perfect. September 16, 2010
By nps07
Format:Hardcover
As a senior in a ST program, I can tell you this book is mainly good for one thing only, the theory behind ST. It covers a lot on what is to come on the CST exam such as, anatomy, basic procedures, basic instruments, sterile technique, and a pretty good section on back table set ups (and thats where it would beat the Alexanders). Before a ST student goes to clinical, the most important thing is to be able to set up a back table, and have fluidity in each and every action in doing so. In saying that this book will prepare you right before clinical, with main cases students get such as: cholecystectomy, TAH, hemicolectomy, etc. diagramed step by step. However this book lacks a high amount of cases, as it only explains common ones, and with least variations.

Pros:
-great for passing the CST examination
-good back table set up section, and preoperative diagramed section
-very good for chunking information for skeletal outlines (will set up good main points)
-diagrams of most common cases assigned to students at start of clinical

cons:
-not detailed, covers only basics of everything
-lacks a good suture section
-lacks in variation of cases
-case amount is much less than miniguides and Alexanders

What I think one should do?
Use this book to help you learn the basics, especially back tables setups and main cases. Use it only as a guideline to really understand most cases, this book is just a base, the Alexanders and pocket mini-guide will come after, to fill everything else in. I would buy all the books I have mentioned, however the pocket guide is not really needed until one starts clinical rotation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Vague, outdated and NO help! October 3, 2009
By D. Beck
Format:Hardcover
This book has many mistakes and is very inacurate to say the least. Our program used this text for our first year of instruction. We found many mistakes, outdated material and misuse in language. This is not a professional text, and caused much confusion in our first year of operation. Please choose another text for your program along with complimentary text for your Surgical Technology teaching. I would not recomend the workbook or the accompanying pocket handbook either.

It is outdated, not well organized, and contains a lot of wrong information. If you do not have to get this book don't.

1.0 out of 5 stars mistakes found in book by students! September 24, 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
I purchased this book for the surgical tech course and during the semester it was noted that the proof reading was never completed. There are many mistakes and some entries do not fully explain a specific procedure. I wish the instructor had proof read this book because the following year they changed books because of the inconsistencies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super informative! March 8, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was bought for a class I was taking. I would recommend it to a future surgical technologist. It's a very heavy book, but after reading what is in it, I can see why. It is filled with a lot of information that a tech would want to know when taking this class. It helped me quite a bit when I was studying for tests.

5.0 out of 5 stars It seems to be a good book. December 30, 2013

I haven't started this course yet, because I am in the winter intermission, and I will be back to school in couple of weeks. But, I like this book already from the first chapter and the foreword that I read on my own. It looks to be a nice and relevant book. The transaction was very swift, and the delivery and handling were impeccable. Would buy from this vendor again.
