Stupid Fun With Large Marge, May 10, 2010
Hoggy G tires and Large Marge 24's are a combo that came with my bike( Surly 1x1). I am making no attempt to separate the tire comments from wheel comments for the sake of this review. This is a street/ dirt oriented setup as opposed to a Pugsly bike/ Large Marge/ Endomorph tire which is more snow/ sand/ swamp oriented.
In the dirt, cranking uphill I no longer experience the drive tire slipping. With a skinny regular mountain bike tire, to get the torque on the ground to climb, I experience a fair amount of slip, which can grind the climbing process to a halt. The wide street slicks grip the dirt like nothing I have ever experienced. This is important to lay the power down with a single speed.
The wheel tire combo has a lot of gyroscopic stabilizing force. It took going way wide around turn 1 to figure out that the bike wants to be counter steered and muscled a bit to turn at high speeds with these huge wheels. For my style of bash, crash, semi out of control riding, this is a good thing. The new style with the big wheels is point the line, and heaven help anything that gets in the way. Roots, rocks, mud, whatever is in the rear view mirror right now. This makes fast downhill trail riding more fun and relaxing. It seems like the bike would be difficult to knock off course. I am going at the bigger rocks and roots to bash off and get a little air, rather than trying to avoid every little rock or rut like before. Point and shoot. Creek crossing goes something like drop front wheel in the water, and crank like crazy toward the opposite bank. It makes it every time! I am not used to riding in water that is up to my ankles on the down stroke!
Street riding these rims has turned a super conservative 57 year old into a curb hopping hooligan. I look at my neighborhood in a totally different way now. I am looking for stairs to ride. What can I bounce off of? What can I hit at speed for some air. If I pedal hard across this neighbors lawn could I hit that far bank just so and...........
My bike was weighed at the shop. A complete large frame 1x1 with these wheels weighs 30.5 pounds. I think the bike could be built with skinny street tires and light rims and get down to 25 lbs, by most reports. I look at the additional weight as "suspension". I could not ride a suspension bike without the suspension. But I can put skinny wheels and tires on this bike, and have a faster, longer distance street bike in a few minutes.
These wheels get noticed. I cannot think of any thing else I could ride that gets as much attention as going down the road on the big gumballs. Everybody gets a WTF look on their face. Men, women, children. This setup has blown my low profile. I just got back from having the rims drilled for Schraders, and slime put in the inner tubes. A salty old bike riding expert was staring at the wheels and tires while I paid the bill. After a minute, he asked "OK, I'll bite, what the heck are those for?" The shop owner chimed in about the little Pugsley bike or something like that. I could tell that he just did not get "it". It is hard to explain fun for fun's sake!
