K-Gr 2-These two characters are featured monthly in Ladybug magazine. When Molly receives some vegetable seeds from her grandmother, she and her cat decide to plant a garden. However, things get complicated when Emmett opens all the packets at once in an attempt to help. The wind scatters the seeds over the carefully prepared ground, and peas, carrots, lettuce, and catnip get mixed up; the friends end up calling their creation their "surprise garden" since they have no idea what will sprout where. This appealing story has fresh, lively illustrations that depict two colorful characters. A good amount of basic gardening information is offered. An addendum supplies more facts and imaginative ideas for extending the experience, including planting a "playhouse" with sunflowers and morning glories, and growing square pumpkins. A thoroughly delightful book that would be useful to initiate lower-elementary units on plants and gardens in the spring.

The late Marylin Hafner illustrated many popular books during her lifetime, including "Hanukkah!" by Roni Schotter; "It's Halloween" and "It's Christmas" by Jack Prelutsky; "Germs Make Me Sick!" by Melvin Berger; and "A Carnival of Animals" by Sid Fleischman. The mother of two daughters, she graduated from Pratt Institute and made her home in Massachusetts.

I bought this book for my 8 yr. old daughter, and she loved it! Cute, funny, and a little surprise at the end. Is very easy to read, lots of beautiful colorful pictures, cute little story. A good little book for those children interested in plants, gardening, or even spring. At the back of the book, there is even a little descriptive tutorial about fun ways to plant your garden. Little fun things to do, like make a square pumpkin out of a milk jug, and turn your garden into a surprise garden. Wonderful Book!
