Every now and then someone writes a cookbook that doesn’t just describe how to make their food, but helps you imagine creating your own food. It teaches you techniques that you could see applying to your own concept. It gives you examples of what someone — with a lot of patience and creativity — was able to create, and makes it seem accessible for you to embark on the same artistic adventure. That’s what this cookbook does. It’s not just a book of recipes, but a showcase and an invitation: here’s what I did, what will you do?

To be honest, I haven’t felt this way since Bakerella started the creative cake pop craze. Amanda isn’t the only person in the world to put something cool inside a cake, sure. But her innovation in the kitchen is inspiring. She makes surprise-inside cakes seem accessible to the home cook on her blog, i am baker, and now in her book as well.

This is a unique and one-of-a-kind baking book, filled with beautiful photography, recipes, stories, and memories. I have been reading it cover to cover for the stories, something I have never done in a cookbook in the past. I have already ordered several to give as gifts to some special people in my life. I love this book.

I was expecting directions for making cakes like the ones that were featured on Americas Best Baker, that showed last summer. This is close, but instead of cutting shapes from another cake and placing them in the batter, this calls for molding shapes out of cake and icing to a "play dough like consistency." I have no interest in eating or serving food of a "play dough like consistency". (I don't like cake pops made like this, either.) However, the NICE surprise is that the book contains lots of other types of ideas for some really elegant and unusual cakes. The accompanying recipes are clear and well-written, and I will definitely use them. So, in all, the book is a keeper

There is something for everyone in this colorful book from Amanda Rettke, founder of the popular blog I Am Baker. Imagine cutting into a cake to reveal a hidden surprise! The only thing better than a delicious cake is a delicious cake baked with a surprise inside. Amanda's cake designs are revolutionary! Simple designs like the Rainbow Cake, Neapolitan Hi-Hat Cake (a showstopper!), and Ombre Cake are perfect for the beginner baker. You can use her delicious cake recipes, box mix cakes, or your favorite family recipes; start where you are most comfortable. Once you've mastered the basics, you can move on to some more complex designs like the Smiley Face Cake, Cherry Cake, Rudolph Cake, and more. You'll have a hard time choosing what to make next!

Filled with full-page, stunning photographs, as well as detailed process shots, Surprise-Inside Cakes takes you through each step to make the perfect surprise-inside cake for your friends and family. Even if you can't wrap your mind around the design you will be just as excited as your guests to cut open your creation! You won't be disappointed.

Amanda writes with passion about her craft, and you will surely enjoy getting to know her through her stories and personal anecdotes. I would recommend this book for anyone desiring to do something different in the kitchen. Give it as a gift to the baker in your life, but be warned- you're going to want to keep a copy for yourself!
