5.0 out of 5 stars God shows up in the ordinary
For me, this book was eye-opening. It was fun to read Terry's journals as he went through this experiment, but also it was incredible as I did the "surprise me" experiement for 30 days. It helped me realize that God DOES work in our lives on a daily basis. He sets many opportunities before us - then, it's our decision whether to take advantage of the situations he puts...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I was expecting the book to reflect the title; hence, a "surprise or lesson from God" would occur everday for 30 days as Mr. Esau experimented with his two word prayer, "Surprise Me". However, as I continued to read, I simply learned more about his thoughts, family, and interests...I truly did not learn much from this experiment. The book almost seemed to be an...

5.0 out of 5 stars God shows up in the ordinary, September 13, 2005
This review is from: Surprise Me: A 30-Day Faith Experiment (Paperback)
For me, this book was eye-opening. It was fun to read Terry's journals as he went through this experiment, but also it was incredible as I did the "surprise me" experiement for 30 days. It helped me realize that God DOES work in our lives on a daily basis. He sets many opportunities before us - then, it's our decision whether to take advantage of the situations he puts us in, and the people He brings into our lives. Terry is a great, funny writer and I think you'll find (if you do this experiement) that God definitely shows up in the ordinary. This would be a great book for a church group or small group to do and share weekly what they're personally learning and seeing God do. What do you have to lose?

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh way to look at spirituality, November 10, 2005
This review is from: Surprise Me: A 30-Day Faith Experiment (Paperback)
I didn't really know what to expect when I came across this book, but it has really shown me a new way to approach my faith. As a fairly new Christian, I haven't always allowed God to do his will in my life, but through Mr. Esau's stories, I have a better handle on how to allow God to 'surpise me' in my own life, by seeking his will more fervently. A good read a person at any point in their journey with God.

i loved the voice of the book....but what a cool idea. i am on day 5 of my "surprise me god" journey.

in the busy world we live in, a world that takes us so far a way from being close to god, these simple words are an amazing way to start the day and connect with what is important.

trust god. but how to get there.

"surprise me god" is a great start.

d.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!, March 2, 2006
This review is from: Surprise Me: A 30-Day Faith Experiment (Paperback)
My sister had heard about this guy, Terry Esau, who was going about encouraging people to pray a simple prayer, "Surprise me God", for 30 days and having them journal their experience. It is a simple idea of inviting God into your life everyday, for 30 days, to do whatever He wants with no strings attached and writing down your reflections about what you think God did during the course of your day. Terry's book is simply the journal of the 30-day journey he took.

Terry's writing is very accessible, fun to read and, as far as I can tell, he is a good writer. His reflections proved helpful in showing, by example, how he looked for the activity of God in his day-to-day life. Terry also presents a way of looking at life and the world through the stories of his experience that can teach us different ways to perceive our day-to-day and God's activity in it that is refreshing and hopeful. Reading about Terry's experience has helped to inform my own `Surprise me God' experiment. I appreciate this book, both it's style and substance.

As a side note, this is not a prosperity doctrine book, in case you were wondering, I know that I was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise Me, God!, August 5, 2009

This review is from: Surprise Me: A 30-Day Faith Experiment (Paperback)
Have been enjoying this study! Very eye opening. Would recommend it to others. Terry has a new way of looking at what we think could be ordinary circumstances or 'coincidences', as events possibly orchestrated by God, whether a fun surprise or a not so fun one. Very thought provoking. Purchase the journal if possilble, as well to keep track of your suprises and thoughts. Within it, there are also scripture readings and questions to ponder.

This was recommended to me by a friend, and I've enjoyed it. I like the writing style and humor in this book, much more than the 'Blue Collar, White Collar' book. His 30 day 'surprise me' experiment will leave you with a feeling of awareness in everyday occurances. I enjoy picking the book up and reading one of the short, easy to read chapters. This would also make a good gift book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Metahorically Mezmerizeddf, April 30, 2008
This review is from: Surprise Me: A 30-Day Faith Experiment (Paperback)
Terry Esau, judging from his bike rides, lives near Lake Minnetonka where
I learned to swim in Wayzata Bay and in later years drank coffee at
Carabou. I would love to drink a latte with him on the sidewalk on a summers day and have a nice visit about how my 30 day Surprise has
turned out. I am going to buy a couple of copies and give them to some
of my friends. His metaphors are sometimes farfetched but funny and relavent.I like his style which is like Anne Lamott ssort of garanteed
to make you smile.

I really enjoyed the read, it was different than his other great book "blue collar God, white collar God". Totally different.

Yet I really enjoyed how it brought into light the mundane thoughts and actions and events of everyday moments. Reading it I really started to see God's presence in my own life.

Great read, great gift.
