"[Horst Moser] did what I wish I had done: He offered his extensive collection of contemporary magazines to readers in the form of a book. Written to appeal to designers as well as non-designers-editors, entrepreneurs, marketers- Surprise Me is not encumbered with insider's jargon. His thorough understanding of the process, combined with intriguing juxtapositions of layouts, no-nonsense comments, and original insight make for an entertaining read-as surprising fresh as the subject matter he is presenting." (From the introduction by Véronique Vienne).

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of examples; little context, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Surprise Me:Editorial Design (Hardcover)
Surprise me: Editorial Design is nothing but examples arranged in categories. There is something here for the serious designer to gleen from exposure but any help from the author as to criteria for inclusion or particularly striking examples is missing. Since the aurthor is German, many of the examples are European and most reprersent the kind of swiss-griddy laid-back style that finds little currency among contemporary (read:young) audiences. Still, there are things here that can inspire a magazine designer, but there was little to "surprise me."
